Jaren Jackson Jr. has been crowned the Defensive Player Of the Year for 2022-23. The rankings were released, and it showed JJJ beat the likes of Brook Lopez, Evan Mobley, Draymond Green, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo, among others.

In a long list that even has Alex Caruso on it, Anthony Davis was nowhere to be mentioned. A reporter criticized giving JJJ the award even though he played 200 fewer minutes than AD, as Davis was never in the running due to his perceived time missed.

“I’m just confused why so many people were comfortable voting Jaren Jackson as the literal winner with 1,787 minutes but wouldn’t even put Anthony Davis on their ballot with 1,904. Anthony Davis was better than most of the people that got votes.”

JJJ technically played 63 games to AD’s 56 but struggled to stay on the court due to his issues with fouling. Jaren definitely earned the honor with his sensational season that saw him be the league’s shot-blocking leader, but to completely omit AD when we just saw him put up 7 blocks on JJJ’s Grizz in the playoffs makes the list seem disingenuous.

Winning Happens In The Postseason

Anthony Davis has never won Defensive Player of the Year despite being a standout on that end of the ball. His injury troubles may hold him back from regular season accolades, but even he is focused on winning titles and possibly Finals MVP over LeBron James. With the new 65-game requirement for awards being introduced, AD’s future chances at the award look slim.

The Lakers and AD are currently 1-0 up on Jaren Jackson’s Grizzlies. These two can prove to each other and the world who the better defender is in this series, with AD currently in the lead with a sensational defensive performance in Game 1.

Davis averaged 2.0 blocks and 1.1 steals this season, having a very holistic impact on the Lakers defensively.
