For over 20 years now, LeBron James has dominated the basketball world at an unprecedented scale. And while you can call any one of LeBron’s 20 seasons a masterpiece, 76ers veteran P.J. Tucker (who has personally played against LeBron) says his 2014-15 run with the Cavs is the peak version of the King.
“That was Bron’s best year; that was the most unstoppable LeBron James that year,’ said Tucker on the NBA Pulse podcast. “That was his first year back in Cleveland. I’m telling y’all, I’m not even debating it, that LeBron was unstoppable.”
That season was LeBron’s first back in a Cavaliers jersey after winning two championships with the Heat. At this point, James was at his physical and mental peak and it showed on the court when he had full control of the game. In 69 contests that season, LeBron averaged 25.3 points, 7.4 assists, and 6.0 rebounds on 48% shooting. The Cavaliers finished 2nd in the East that season and advanced to the NBA Finals for their first matchup against the emerging Golden State Warriors.
LeBron’s Greatest Season Ever?
When considering LeBron’s greatest season ever, the 20014-15 season has to rank near the top given how unstoppable he was on both ends of the floor. Realistically, it can also be argued LeBron’s greatest stretch was during the 2008-229 campaign. He averaged 28.4 points per game that season along with 7.2 assists all while leading the Cavs to an impressive 66-15 record.
The biggest candidate of all for LeBron’s all-time masterpiece is the 2015-16 campaign. LeBron only put up 25.3 points per game during the season but he went to another level in the playoffs and put the Cavs on his back to help them come back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. But when you really think about it, any season from LeBron’s time with the Heat or his return to the Cavs can be considered his best. James is the true king of consistency and when you have a track record as long as his, it gets close to impossible to pick apart one from the rest.
LeBron’s GOAT Case Is Growing
It’s 2024 now and it’s clear that King James is not quite the same player he used to be. But at almost 40 years old, that much is to be expected of him after 20+ seasons in the league. To this point, nobody has been able to match LeBron’s longevity and we might never see it again at this scale. James, a 19x All-Star, 19x All-NBA player, 4x MVP, and 4x champion, already has enough to rank as one of the best we’ve ever seen.
But if he keeps going like this, and adds another title to his name, it could cement his status as the greatest basketball player in history. At the very least, his body of work is proof enough that he belongs in the conversation and he’s building on his story each and every game. So while there will always be some debate about which season is LeBron’s best, there is no debate on the fact that his career is unmatched in the NBA and there’s still more to come before he walks away for good.
