If someone asked Michael Jordan about the MVP trophy, he would likely say that he should have won it every season he was in the league. And he wouldn’t be wrong either, Jordan was by far the greatest NBA player every season during his prime.

That’s not imply he didn’t win MVPs, Michael Jordan won the award five teams during his time with the Chicago Bulls. But his second win in 1991 made him emotional, and he once explained why.

“This particular time, I was being given that MVP by my teammates,” said Michael Jordan during an old interview with Pat Riley. “By people that I play with and I’m with eight months out of the year instead of the media. Our players actually gave me that because of the way they play.

“That was very touching for me, and when they said they were gonna go out there and help me receive this, I did all I could just to hold back the tears because it really showed to me what they really felt for me to win that award. It was a family situation.”

Michael Jordan wasn’t particularly known to be the most loving teammate, he punched more than one of them during his time with the team. And some have described how intense he would get if others weren’t up to the mark according to him. But based on his answer to this question, it is evident that MJ himself has a lot of love for his teammates as well.

Michael Jordan And The MVP Award Have An Interesting History

One would assume that Michael Jordan would have won the most MVPs of all time, but in fact, he is tied for second place with the legendary Bill Russell. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has more than him, holding the record with six. But as he made amply obvious during the Last Dance, anytime any player won it over him in the 1990s, he thought it was a slight and used it as motivation.

It was all about being the best and winning for Michael Jordan, so an MVP trophy was always going to matter to him. The fact that his teammates were the ones giving it to him must have also meant the world as a sign of trust in their leader. There’s a reason those Bulls teams were considered unbeatable by most of the league at that time.
