Michael Jordan’s Former Agent Says Superstar Players Should Make More Money: “The Distribution Of Salaries Is Really Distorted…”

  • David Falk says the NBA’s distribution of salaries is “distorted”
  • Falk argues that LeBron, Steph, and Luka Doncic should be making $100 million per year
  • NBPA’s restrictions are putting a cap on total earning potential

LeBron James has made over $400 million from his time in the NBA, and that’s not counting the millions he gets in sponsorships and other projects. LeBron, like many other top athletes, has reached ridiculous levels of compensation and it has resulted in a mountain of wealth for James and his family.

But in a recent interview on Sirius XM NBA Radio, longtime NBA agent David Falk (best known for representing Michael Jordan), suggested that players like LeBron are actually underpaid in the NBA.

“I think the distribution of salaries in the NBA is really distorted. If you go back three years, and you look at the world’s greatest soccer player, do you know how much that salary was? $180 million. If you ask me, with all the money that the league currently has, if you ask me what a guy like Steph Curry, LeBron in his prime, Luka Doncic, Jokic, Embiid… those guys should be making $100 million right now and there’s only one reason they’re not and it’s because the union has placed an artificial restriction on what they can make. The money they save for not paying those top 8 or 10 guys 100 million is why players who are very good but not superstars are making $50 instead of $10.”

Should superstar players in the NBA be paid more?

LeBron is already one of the NBA’s highest earners at $44.7 million annually, but his worth to the Lakers probably exceeds that number. After 20 years of excellence, LeBron has transcended the game itself to become a global celebrity.

When he joined the Lakers in 2019, it breathed new life into the franchise and allowed them to build a contender that went on to win the championship the following summer.

Do Top NBA Athletes Deserve Bigger Salaries?

With Jaylen Brown having just signed the richest contract in NBA history with the Celtics, earning potential has never been higher for players in the NBA. To argue that those at the top should make even more is questionable, at best, but they are the ones that bring the most eyes to the game.

Going forward, it’s likely we will only see an increase in player salaries but figuring out who deserves what is always going to be a topic of debate. For now, it’s safe to assume both LeBron and Steph are satisfied with the money they’ve made so far…
