Minnesota Timberwolves Reportedly Offered The No. 1 Pick To Golden State Warriors Before The 2020 NBA Draft

While the 2020 NBA Draft was questioned by many draft analysts, it is clear that there were many talented players in the class. The Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves had two of the top picks in that draft. While the Minnesota Timberwolves stuck with selecting Anthony Edwards with the 1st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, there has recently been a report that they were trying to trade down to the No. 2 overall picks, which was owned by the Golden State Warriors.

Brian Windhorst has recently stated that the Minnesota Timberwolves were trying to move their pick on his Hoop Collective podcast. He stated that the Timberwolves were trying to get back their 2021 draft pick from the Warriors, and tried to get the Warriors interested in the potential of moving up in order to regain the valuable pick.

To go back to draft night – the Wolves were very interested in trading out of this pick. They were trying up until they were on the clock, from what I have been told, to get the Warriors interested in moving up.

The Warriors have their draft pick this year depending on where it falls, and I think they wanted it back quite frankly. They were saber-rattling, according to the stories, that they were gonna take James Wiseman.

The Warriors were really locked in on James Wiseman.

Anthony Edwards is a top-2 candidate for the ROTY award, and it would have been fun to potentially see him on the Golden State Warriors if they had traded up to the 1st overall pick. Realistically, it seems as though the Warriors would have had to give up the 2021 Timberwolves draft pick and potentially another young player, as well as the No. 2 overall pick just to move up to No. 1.

While Anthony Edwards is a scintillating player, that is a decent amount of assets to give up purely to move up one selection. James Wiseman still has all the potential to become a productive big man, and guards usually develop faster than big men. It remains to be seen how the selection looks in the long run, but James Wiseman fits a positional need for the Warriors and is still a very capable player.
