4 Years Ago, Anthony Davis Shut Down The Idea That He And Russell Westbrook Might One Day Join The Lakers

Anything can happen in the NBA. Whether it’s crazy, Cinderella runs, unlikely superstars, or wild behind-the-scenes drama, the league might be the best in the world at stirring things up and being generally unpredictable.

Perhaps nothing reflects this more than trade season. From the NBA draft all through the deadline, rumors are running rampant and fans can’t help but anticipate major moves. It’s a pretty exciting time with a ton of rumors that don’t often get realized until years later.

In fact, just a few seasons ago, Anthony Davis shut down a rumor involving himself and Russell Westbrook possibly teaming up on the Lakers.

“Some rumor from somewhere said me and Russell was going to LA. I haven’t talked to Russell or whatever the source is about that so I’m not sure where this came from but I’m here. I just signed an extension here. If I didn’t want to be here, I would have never signed the extension.

I love playing for this organization. I don’t intend on going anywhere. I want to be here…”

Back then, AD was a happy member of the New Orleans Pelicans, while Russell Westbrook was still a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder The two were not on a collision course to become teammates.

Fast forward to today, however, and that whole quote by Anthony Davis becomes quite ironic. Not only did he force his way out of the Pelicans before the end of his contract, but he specifically demanded to be sent to the Lakers.

Funnily enough, Russell Westbrook also seems to be close to becoming a Laker as well, according to a recent report by Matt Moore of Action Network.

So, it seems that a “rumor” from four years ago might actually become a reality today.

For anyone that knows the journeys of Westbrook and Davis, it’s a pretty amazing and wild thing to imagine them as teammates next to LeBron James. And it just goes to show that, sometimes, even the wildest of rumors can come true.
