NBA commissioner Adam Silver has done a fantastic job in his role since taking over for David Stern in 2014. Under his guidance, the league has grown exponentially with millions of new fans all across the world.

Of course, Silver isn’t yet done perfecting the NBA landscape, and this season in particular, has brought brand new challenges for Silver and league executives to tackle.

One such challenge is figuring out how to address the recent surge of scoring numbers. This season, players are racking up points at a ridiculous pace and it seems like every other night some big-name star is going off for 50, 60, or in the case of Donovan Mitchell, 71.

Many fans and experts have called for the league to do something about this growing trend, but Silver doesn’t seem to be too concerned.

NBA Commissioner Responds To Concerns About Scoring Uptick This Season

While the balance between defense and offense is clearly broken, this might be the best way for fans to enjoy the sport. But as Silver explained during a recent interview, he’s not opposed to making some changes this summer.

“We’re not traditionalists in that we’re afraid to make changes,” Silver said. “We are constantly reassessing. That’s what Joe Dumars and Byron Spruell’s jobs are, together with our competition committee. We’ll continue to look at it. I think the fans are telling us, and responding with record ratings, that the game is exciting as ever. But we’re not afraid to reexamine it. Generally, we don’t make rule changes mid-course or during a season. But we sit down at the end of the season, we look at all the data, and we’ll assess it. But it’s interesting.”

“As I mentioned at the top of the press conference, four of the top five scorers are international players, and these great shooters are coming from everywhere now. We want a multifaceted game. I hear some of the criticism of we want it to be all 3-point shooting. For those who have been covering the league for a long time, I remember people were saying it’s all about dunking and guys can’t shoot. Now it’s they shoot too well, it should be more of an inside game. We’ll keep looking at it.”

So, any fans hoping for a change this season should probably give up that dream now. As Silver explained, the league doesn’t mess with the rules mid-season.

Still, there’s reason to believe that the NBA could take action if they see the current scoring pace as a problem. So far, though, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The truth is, the more points players can score, the more exciting the game becomes for the average viewer.
