Boston Celtics Reportedly Will Not Remove ‘Interim’ Tag From Head Coach Joe Mazzulla’s Title

Despite his excellent start to the season, Boston Celtics' Interim Head Coach tag will reportedly not be removed anytime soon.

The Boston Celtics had question marks around them going into the 2022-23 NBA season. While the team still retained the players that took them to within 2 wins of a championship and even made additions, they had an unexpected issue. Head Coach Ime Udoka’s affair with a team staffer became one of the biggest scandals of the offseason and threatened to derail the Celtics.

The Utah Jazz had already poached one of his assistants, Will Hardy. So it fell to Joe Mazzulla to step up as the Head Coach of the Boston Celtics for the season. Ime Udoka was suspended for the season, making Mazzulla just the interim Head Coach of the team. However, the understanding was that the Celtics would likely move on from Udoka, but the latest reports make it seem a bit confusing, to say the least.

NBA Journalist Says The Celtics Don’t Have A Plan To Make Joe Mazzulla’s Appointment Permanent

The Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA at 24-10, which many people thought wouldn’t happen after all the uncertainty around the team. This led to speculation that the Celtics would move forward with Mazzulla at the helm. His relationship with Jayson Tatum was also mentioned as a point in his favor. However, if the latest report from the Boston Globe is to be believed, then Boston isn’t close to a decision like that.

“Speaking of Mazzulla, a league source said the Celtics still have no plans to remove the interim tag from his title before season’s end,” Himmelsbach wrote. “Mazzulla is well aware of the situation and understands that he’ll be coaching this entire year regardless.”

Ime Udoka is still highly respected for his abilities in the league, this was evidenced when he almost landed a job despite being suspended. The Brooklyn Nets didn’t end up acquiring Udoka, but the fact that they were interested is a sign that he is still valuable.

There is no doubt that the Celtics have barely missed a beat with Mazzulla at the helm, but as the season goes on, questions about their coaching situation will only grow louder. The success they are experiencing will also raise more questions, especially if they can carry it into another deep playoff run. It’s hard to tell what they will do, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
