The vibes with the Phoenix Suns have been rapidly changing over the last 2 years. Not long ago, they were the lovable underdogs of the league that broke out of NBA purgatory and built a contender. However, the last few years have changed fan perception of the Suns as they got more braggadocios before blowing 2-0 leads in consecutive playoff runs.

The last time was against the Dallas Mavericks in the 2022 Playoffs. Monty Williams and Deandre Ayton had a lot of bad blood that season, with the pair getting into a courtside argument that made everyone believe that Ayton would leave the team in the summer as a free agent.

The Suns wasted no time in bringing him back when he signed a contract with the Indiana Pacers but it seems the hard feelings are still there. Ayton and Williams were seen having a screaming match on the bench in the Suns’ shock loss to the Washington Wizards.

Both Ayton and Williams are passionate people who are bound to have public disagreements, especially in a close game that they were expected to win easily. Ayton has averaged 17.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists and is hoping to have a bigger role in the Suns’ success than he had in the past.

Are The Suns Still The Western Conference Favorites?

After the season started and the Golden State Warriors and LA Clippers had tough starts, most people gravitated back to the Suns as the favorites in the West. They started the season really well before dropping many games in December, including going on a 5-game losing streak.

This was an ugly loss that they should have closed out. With the only other experienced team atop the West being the Denver Nuggets, the Suns may still have a shot at contending. For that, they need to figure out the chemistry between their coach and center while ensuring that Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges, and Chris Paul perform to a high standard.
