Joel Embiid has been once again finding form, and the Philadelphia 76ers have reached the 15-win mark this season. They are climbing steadily toward the top of the Eastern Conference, although they will have to play at a very high level to pose a threat to the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks at the top of the conference.

However, when any team has Joel Embiid playing the way he has been, they always have a chance to make it all the way to the top. Embiid has had some stellar performances recently, he has scored more than 50 points on multiple occasions. And the Sixers are finally starting to find some semblance of health. However, there is still some weird energy around the franchise, even Joel Embiid made some bizarre statements recently.

Doc Rivers Opened Up About Joel Embiid’s Bid For MVP And What It Means For The Sixers

Joel Embiid has been a frontrunner for the MVP award, which has a new trophy now, for the last 2 seasons. Nikola Jokic’s availability and excellence has seen him lose out both times, but he is now right in the mix for the award once again. All the talk around the MVP in the last two seasons has been suggested as a distraction for the franchise at times, but Doc Rivers had an interesting answer when asked if he would be lobbying for his superstar to get the award this year (via Heavy).

“I don’t know if it’s distracting or not. It’s a good question. I don’t know. I’ve always been behind it. But you know who’s really behind it? It’s Joel’s play. And so, all the guys who end up in the running, they’re not campaigning except for by their play and that usually speaks for itself.”

Thinking of something like this as a distraction is interesting, but all the noise around the situation must get a little much at times. Joel Embiid will surely want to be named MVP if he continues performing at an elite level, but the race for the award is as intense as it has ever been.

Ultimately, a lot depends on what the Philadelphia 76ers can do this season. Their playoff record is the biggest concern for the franchise, and MVP or not, Embiid will be expected to lead his team deep into the playoffs. The Sixers are due for an explosive season one way or another, and a lot is at stake for all the parties involved.
