Dwyane Wade has supported his children every step of the way, but he isn’t planning on providing financial assistance to his eldest son for much longer. On the latest episode of his podcast, Wade revealed he has given Zaire four years to figure out his life.
“My son right now is 23 years old,” Wade said. “He didn’t go to college, we sent him right to the G League at 19. He went to he went to Africa, he went to China, he has had no time to really figure life out.
“And so for me, my conversation with my oldest son who is really independent is, ‘Hey, you got four years. You got a buffer. You have done this. You got the next four years of your life from 23 to 27, to figure out what you want to do. Go chase what you want to chase, but hey, you got a trust fund, too, that’s going to give you that soft cushion for the next four years to do that.’ Now, when that trust fund run out, you on your own, Jojo,” Wade stated. “This ain’t a gas tank, it don’t get refilled.”
Wade did stress that Zaire is quite independent, and he’d like him to stay that way. He doesn’t want his son to start slacking at any point just because his father is a millionaire.
Zaire has been given a great platform to build from, but Wade isn’t planning on holding his hand for his whole life. That’s a good approach as well, as you would ideally want your kids to stand on their own feet after they get to a certain age.
As for what Zaire wants to do in life, it would appear it is to play basketball professionally. He even decided against going to college in 2021 despite getting offers from DePaul, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Toledo.
Zaire went directly to the G League instead and was selected with the 10th pick of the 2021 G League Draft by the Salt Lake City Stars. He didn’t make much of an impact in the league, though.
Zaire only ended up playing 12 games in the 2021-22 campaign for the Stars, averaging 1.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. That season would also prove to be his last in the G League. He chose to head overseas after that, signing with the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League in 2023.
Most recently, Zaire played for the Macau Black Bears in the Asian Tournament in 2024. The 23-year-old still has aspirations of making it to the NBA, as evidenced by his telling a fan on Instagram that he’ll be in the league in due time. Here’s hoping he fulfills his dream.
