Coming into the 2022-23 season, the Atlanta Hawks were looking to build upon their Eastern Conference Finals run from a few years back. With Dejounte Murray (the summer’s big signing) joining Trae Young, Clint Capela, and John Collins, the thinking was that they’d be one of the powerhouses in the East.
This season, with about half the games in the books, that hasn’t been the case so far. The Hawks are just 19-22 and have not looked like a threat at all to win the title, and it seems like only a matter of time before the core is broken up.
Hawks Guard Dejounte Murray Speaks Candidly On Ongoing Trade Rumors
With countless obstacles both on and off the court in the way of success, Dejounte Murray recently spoke about his team’s struggles and the ongoing fight to keep focused amid the chorus of trade rumors.
“I wouldn’t say more than what I expected, but more than where I came from in San Antonio where everything was just not as loud,” Murray continued. “There’s a lot going on, but for me I’m just trying to keep guys together with my leadership, showing up to work, working hard, being vocal and keeping us together, and trying to keep the outside noise the outside noise.
Tensions flared for the Hawks after it was revealed that Trae had an altercation with head coach Nate McMillan that caused him to miss a game. While the worst of it may be behind them now, Murray still expects a lot of noise leading up to the trade deadline next month.
“But at the end of the day, we all see it. You can’t hide. You can’t run from it. For me, like I say and I always preach, adversity shows what you’re built of and who you are. I love adversity. From where I come from to make it to the NBA, getting overlooked, getting hurt, being out a whole year — just fighting. No matter what. Adversity, it helps build you up. So like I said, there’s a lot of noise, but at the end of the day, winning takes care of it all. So we need to control what we can control, continue to come together as brothers, and try to go out and win basketball games.”
The NBA is as wide-open as it has ever been, and the Hawks aren’t too far behind the pack as things stand today.
If they make a move or two that helped them in the long run, it might just be enough for them to salvage this season and make a meaningful playoff run.
If not, fans will soon start labeling this Young/Murray backcourt experiment as a failure.
