The great Bill Russell is no more, and it has left people around the world with a very heavy heart. Russell had a big impact on countless individuals over the course of his life, and that wasn’t just because he was a great basketball player. He broke many racial barriers during his time in the NBA and had a big role to play in where the league is today.

Many of the legends of the game gave out touching tributes to Russell, with Michael Jordan thanking him for paving the way and setting an example for black players entering the league. The tributes kept coming as the news of his passing spread, as people in and around the game mourned this loss.

Fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was one in the long list of people who had their lives impacted in a big way by Russell, and the two shared a very special bond. So, when he heard the unfortunate news of the great man’s passing, Kareem sent out an emotional message where he honored his mentor and friend.

“Bill Russell was the quintessential big man – not because of his height but because of the size of his heart. In basketball he showed us how to play with grace and passion. In life he showed us how to live with compassion and joy. He was my friend. My mentor. My role model. RIP my friend… My deepest condolences to his family…”

That was a very touching tribute from Kareem, and it shows just how highly he thought of Russell, the human being. The Celtics legend won a record 11 NBA titles to go with 5 MVP awards, but he was so much more than just one of the greatest ever to play in the NBA, as his impact went well beyond the basketball court.

He will be sorely missed, but while he is gone, his influence on those that followed him is everlasting.
