Kyrie Irving Might Not Be Leaving The Brooklyn Nets Next Offseason

Kyrie Irving's decision to choose a team in the offseason isn't as clear as many have thought it would be.

Kyrie Irving is having a fantastic season for the Brooklyn Nets after a turbulent summer and start of the season. Irving and the Nets couldn’t agree on a contract extension in the summer followed up by Irving getting in hot water for sharing an anti-Semitic movie on Twitter and being suspended by the Nets organization.

Many have believed that Irving will likely leave the Nets in the summer, with bad blood with the team and their reluctance to give him a max contract extension. However, Mark Schwartz of the New York Post revealed what ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks had to say about Irving’s summer decision.

“I don’t think it’s crazy,” ESPN front-office insider Bobby Marks said over the phone Tuesday. “I think [Irving returning to the Nets is] probably more likely than not.”

“I do still think it’s hard for a team to commit more than two seasons to him,” Bobby Marks said of Irving, who still is eligible for a four-year, $198 million extension, but, “I think the days of a four-year, $200 million player — unless it’s Brooklyn, which I don’t think it is — are long gone for him.” (h/t NY Post)

The likeliest landing spot for Kyrie would be the Los Angeles Lakers, who have cap space in the summer and the ability to sign Irving to an offer sheet if he leaves the Nets. However, the success of this season might be the biggest factor in Irving’s decision.

Will Kyrie Irving Return To The Nets?

Kyrie has been one of the primary reasons behind the Nets’ current 12-game winning streak. He is averaging 29.3 points on 54.3% field goal efficiency, with 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists. He is also shooting 45.5% from three in this stretch. If his play sustains and the Nets make a run to the NBA title, the Nets might need to keep Irving or risk upsetting Kevin Durant once again.

The ultimate decision lies with Irving, who most likely will have other teams vying for his signature. The Nets’ success will be crucial in determining whether the franchise wants to offer a contract to the star or not.
