Kyrie Irving is one of the 3 No. 1 overall picks the Cleveland Cavaliers used in the 2010s and is without a question the best pick they made at this time. Irving’s emergence into an All-Star on Cleveland was rapid and made the team an enticing enough project for LeBron James to return to after his 4 years in Miami. He also hit the shot that guaranteed the team’s first-ever championship in franchise history.

Irving was among the best players in the league when he was with Cleveland, though his departure to the Celtics in 2017 was premature and killed the Cavaliers chances of beating the rival Golden State Warriors in 2018. As Kyrie went to his NBA home in Cleveland with the Brooklyn Nets, fans wondered whether he would get his jersey retired by the franchise when he retires.

Irving should get his jersey retired because LeBron James and Kevin Love likely will. Love stayed on the team even after LeBron left and if he doesn’t leave to help the new-look Cavs contend. Not having Irving in the rafters next to the pair will be odd given his importance to the team’s first-ever title.

Will The Cavaliers Retire Kyrie Irving’s Jersey?

The Cavs might choose not to honor Kyrie due to his short tenure with the team and his acrimonious departure in 2017. Irving is also a very controversial figure, so honoring him with a jersey retirement isn’t as easy. He averaged 21.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in 6 seasons with the Cavs.

From a basketball perspective, Irving’s impact on the franchise is as profound as anyone in the rafters already. For a man to hit arguably the greatest shot in NBA history to complete a 3-1 Finals comeback against the greatest regular season team ever and not have his jersey retired for the franchise would be odd. Especially when it was the first title for that franchise.
