Anthony Davis has received a lot of criticism throughout his career for being unavailable due to injury. In light of this, his former teammate Patrick Beverley made a rather disrespectful statement on an episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Nightcap Podcast.
While discussing the superstar swap between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks, Beverley and Sharpe attempted to re-enact the call leading up to the blockbuster trade.
Sharpe started by saying, “What you think?- You think we can get Anthony Davis off of you for Luka?”
“No, no, no, no, no,” Beverley interrupted. “The language was different. The language had to be like like this: ‘Aye! ring-ring-ring. What’s up?'”
“Aye, Pat, what’s going on, man?” Sharpe said, joining in.
“I’m good. Check it out. I got something for you. I’m about to give you a Ferrari, you give me back a bag of potatoes,” Beverley continued. “Matter of fact- I ain’t gonna lie to you. A bag of potatoes with a hole in the bottom, because you’re giving me damaged goods.”
Beverley added to his statements by saying, “Man, you’re giving me damaged goods. I got my goods. I couldn’t even eat my goods. I can’t play my goods. I can’t cook my goods. My goods ain’t available.”
Patrick Beverley’s comments echo the sentiments of players and fans alike. But his comments may be perceived as out of line.
The Dallas Mavericks’ move to trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis raised eyebrows throughout the basketball fraternity. Although Davis is a perennial All-Star and DPOY candidate when available, there is no doubt that he comes with his fair share of risks and baggage.
Davis’s debut with the Dallas Mavericks got off to a spectacular start. In 30 minutes of playing time against the Houston Rockets, the Mavericks center recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury and was subsequently sidelined for over a month.
In the span of 18 games leading up to Davis’s return, Dallas notched six wins and 12 losses and found themselves swooning out of the playoff picture. With their superstar guard, Kyrie Iriving, also out for the season, the Mavericks fell upon hard times.
Since returning from injury, Davis has recorded an average of 18.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. In this span, the Mavericks have recorded a 4-3 record. This currently sees them placed tenth in the Western Conference (38-42).
The change in personnel hasn’t panned out the way Dallas would have hoped for. Although a healthy Anthony Davis could effectively become an anchor for the team, it will only be a possibility in the next season.
Anthony Davis and the Mavericks will head into their next matchup against the Toronto Raptors on Friday at 8:30 pm ET with the hope of building some momentum ahead of their Play-In tournament games.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers have benefitted greatly from the deal, as Luka Doncic continues to make his mark on the team. After a glorious 45-point outing on his return to Dallas, Doncic and the Lakers will hope to secure a win in their upcoming match against the Houston Rockets on Friday at 10:30 pm ET.
