Jalen Suggs Inks 5-Year, $150.5 Million Contract Extension With Magic After Stellar Season

The Orlando Magic and Jalen Suggs have agreed to a five-year, $150.5 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This extension solidifies Suggs as a key piece of the Magic’s young core, which includes other rising stars like Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero.

The deal, which comes just before the rookie extension deadline, ensures that Suggs will remain in Orlando through at least the 2029 season, providing both the player and the franchise with long-term stability.

Jalen Suggs, 23, was drafted fifth overall by the Magic in the 2021 NBA Draft, and while his career got off to a rocky start with injuries and inconsistent shooting, his third season marked a breakout year. In the 2023-24 season, Suggs averaged 12.6 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting a career-best 47.1% from the field and an impressive 39.7% from beyond the arc.

He played a crucial role in Orlando’s defensive scheme, earning All-Defensive Second Team honors, and his ability to knock down shots from deep made him a more complete player on both ends of the floor. His effort was a testament to the growth he has shown not just as a scorer, but as a player capable of impacting the game in various ways.

The Orlando Magic have made a concerted effort to lock up their promising young talents, having also extended Franz Wagner with a five-year contract worth up to $270 million earlier this summer. With Suggs’ new deal now in place, Orlando has invested heavily in its youthful roster, setting up the team for potential long-term success.

Suggs’ impact goes beyond just his stats, as he has become a vocal leader and emotional anchor for the Magic. Head coach Jamahl Mosley praised Suggs for his passion and energy, noting that he “wears his emotion and his heart on his sleeve.” Suggs’ intensity has made him a favorite among teammates as well, with guard Cole Anthony describing him as “crazy… in all the best ways” and calling his energy contagious.

While some teams might hesitate to invest heavily in a player with early-career struggles, the Magic have seen enough from Suggs to justify the long-term commitment. His improvements in shooting and defense, combined with his leadership qualities, make him an essential part of Orlando’s future.

The front office clearly views him as a critical piece alongside Wagner and Banchero, and with other key players like Wendell Carter Jr. also locked into long-term deals, the Magic are positioned to build around this core for years to come.

For Suggs, this deal provides financial security, but it also comes with expectations. The Magic are a team on the rise, and with this extension, they are counting on Suggs to continue developing into a cornerstone player capable of helping lead the franchise to playoff success.

With the extension in place, the Magic can now focus on the upcoming season, where they aim to continue their upward trajectory. Suggs, fresh off his best season yet, will be a central figure in those plans as Orlando looks to take the next step in their rebuild. His growth as a player, particularly as a shooter and defender, has positioned him to be a key contributor to the Magic’s resurgence.
