As the Boston Celtics were getting pummeled at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, star forward Jayson Tatum gave the fans a big scare in the third quarter.

Without any noticeable collisions or falls, Tatum walked to the locker room with a look of defeat, sparking immediate concern. The issue seemed to be with his left calf, and while he did return to the game, things were never quite the same for the rest of the night.

There’s no doubt that Tatum wanted to suit up and help his team to victory, but he may not have been 100%. Even after he came back, fans couldn’t help but notice the sight of him doing some courtwork during a timeout. He was seemingly trying to shake off the pain, but it hardly made a difference in a game that was already trending in the wrong direction.

The 6’8″ swingman spent most of the year in recovery from a torn Achilles tendon. It was a dark period for the Celtics star (2024 NBA champion), but he worked hard to return this season and give his team a fighting chance to win the title. In 16 games, he averaged 21.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game on 41.1% shooting from the field and 32.9% shooting from three. Between his return, Brown’s rise, and the contributions of key role players, the Celtics secured the second seed in the East, but now they face a crisis that could end their season early. According to one doctor, there’s a realistic chance that Tatum may not even be there for Friday’s must-win game.

“Jayson Tatum suffered a calf injury in tonight‘s game,” wrote Dr. Jesse Morse. “Potentially very concerning as the series turns to a pivotal Game 7. Depending on the specifics of the injury, there is a chance he misses this game.”

By all accounts, Tatum was healthy and injury-free before tonight’s game. There were no limitations on his role or minutes, and they were favored to take care of business against an inconsistent 76ers squad. Instead, they are now set for a Game 7 at home, which may or may not end in their victory. If Tatum is now compromised, it only worsens their chances of finishing off their opponents.

In the end, no matter which way you slice it, the Celtics have lost momentum in this series. Besides the injuries, chemistry has been off lately, reflecting a team that’s struggling to remember what made them successful over the past six months. There’s also the Joel Embiid problem. His return to action has added a new variable to the series, and the Celtics haven’t been able to answer. As much as Neemias Queta and Sam Hauser have been holding down Boston’s frontcourt, they are no match for Joel Embiid and Paul George, who are getting whatever they want offensively.

Tonight, in 28 minutes, Tatum had arguably his worst playoff game of the season with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists on 46.2% shooting and 33.3% shoting from three. Neither he nor Brown reached the 20-point mark, illustrating just how much of a struggle scoring was. To avoid disaster on Saturday, Tatum will have to play more like himself, and that means he’ll have to be injury-free.
