The Golden State Warriors dropped to 19-20 on the season following a 104-101 loss to the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. It’s becoming clearer by the day that the Warriors need to make a move but Stephen Curry stated postgame that he doesn’t want the team to get reckless and hurt their future.
“Desperate trades or desperate moves that deplete the future, there is a responsibility on allowing or keeping the franchise in a good space and good spot when it comes to where we leave this thing when we’re done,” Curry said. “Doesn’t mean that you’re not trying to get better. It doesn’t mean that you’re not active in any type of search.
“If you have an opportunity where a trade makes sense or even in the summer free agency makes sense, you want to continue to get better,” Curry stated. “Nobody wants to be stale or be in a situation where you’re passing up opportunities. But it doesn’t mean that you’re desperate, just flinging assets all around the place just because you want to do something.
“(GM) Mike (Dunleavy) understands we want to win,” Curry continued. “We want to be in that position where we’ve always said that you want to be relevant in the championship type of chase. While we understand we’re getting older and deeper into our careers and allowing some of the young guys to kind of blossom, it doesn’t mean you’re getting desperate.
“So, it’s better to kinda be patient and understand what that looks like,” Curry added. “I know Mike is always on the phone trying to figure it out. That’s what a good GM does. Doesn’t mean there’s a deal at the table, doesn’t that mean you’re desperate, doesn’t mean that you’re just flinging assets all the way around and being reckless with it.”
The trade deadline is on Feb 6, and Curry, who had 26 points (9-17 FG), seven rebounds, seven assists, and a steal against the Raptors, was asked if he was comfortable with the Warriors’ activity level on the market.
“If there was a situation that made sense for our team, I’m pretty sure we’d know about it,” Curry said. “That’s how we’ve always operated. That’s the expectation now until February 6th.”
Curry’s comments suggest there isn’t a good deal on the table for the Warriors at present. They could try to force the situation but he wouldn’t be in favor of it. We have seen many superstars over the years not care too much about the future of their franchise in their older years but the two-time MVP doesn’t fall in that category.
That is quite admirable, but Curry wanting the Warriors to keep an eye on the future hurts his chances of adding to his resume. As things stand, it is hard to be optimistic about the 10-time All-Star’s chances of winning a fifth title with the franchise.
Curry isn’t the only Warrior icon who thinks this way, though. Draymond Green is also not in favor of trading major assets in win-now moves. He stressed that the Warriors must not panic and should only make the right moves.
The Warriors have made one trade so far this season, as they acquired Dennis Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets. It was considered a good move, but Schroder has struggled for his new team, averaging 10.1 points per game on 33.8% shooting from the field. You’d expect him to play better over time but it’s not looking good right now.
Based on Curry and Green’s statements, it would be fair to assume that if the Warriors do end up making another move before the deadline, it won’t be a major one. They might make some smaller ones that they feel work for them.
We came up with some intriguing mock trades that would see the Warriors land an ideal stretch-five. They won’t sacrifice their future with these moves and it will be interesting to see if they go after any of the players mentioned.
The Warriors are very unlikely to land them or anyone else for that matter soon, though. They will have to work with what they have when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves next at Target Center on Wednesday at 8 PM ET.
