Stephen Curry has now established himself as an all-time great, but former NBA player Victor Oladipo would put him in even more rarified air. On an episode of his Inner Court podcast, Oladipo explained why he believes Curry is the greatest player ever.
“I would consider him the best ever,” Oladipo said. “And I would consider him that because he’s supposed to be playing golf, bro. If you really look at him, he’s supposed to be playing golf. He’s out there and he Himalaya out there. He’s doing his thing.
“He’s changed the game completely,” Oladipo continued. “…I saw him, I had to guard him, it’s really different. He has changed the game so drastically that guys shoot 50 threes a game now, and that’s only because of him.
“I’ll give Klay [Thompson] some credit too, their style of playing in Golden State, but man, he changed the game completely,” Oladipo added. “And I gotta consider you one of the greats if you change the game like that, if you change the format of how we play as a whole.”
Curry certainly has changed the game in a way that few others have. Teams are shooting more threes than ever before, and the Golden State Warriors‘ superstar was the one who got the ball rolling in that regard with his marksmanship.
Curry has also built up an incredible resume that includes four titles, a Finals MVP, two MVPs, and two scoring titles. The 11-time All-Star is also the greatest shooter we have ever seen and has been a dominant force for over a decade.
For his career, Curry now averages 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. He has given opponents nightmares, and Oladipo certainly didn’t enjoy their meetings. Curry won each of the first 10 games between them, with Oladipo only coming out on top in their 11th and final one.
While one can go on and on about Curry’s greatness, it would be a bit of a stretch to consider him the best ever. Sure, Michael Jordan and LeBron James did not change the game the way he has, but their resumes are better than his.
Jordan won six titles, six Finals MVPs, five MVPs, a DPOY, and 10 scoring titles in his storied career. He dominated on both ends of the floor and is widely regarded as the greatest ever.
James, meanwhile, has won four titles, four Finals MVPs, four MVPs, a scoring title, and an assists title. He is the league’s all-time leading scorer and is setting various statistical records that are going to be virtually impossible to break.
Curry will need to add to his resume if he is to surpass Jordan and James and become the greatest ever. The 37-year-old does have a shot at winning another title following Jimmy Butler’s arrival, and time will tell if he pulls it off.
Even if Curry doesn’t win another title, Shaquille O’Neal would put him alongside James and Jordan. O’Neal recently demanded that fans put Curry in the GOAT conversation. The big man didn’t proclaim the guard as the greatest ever, but believes he deserves to be in the mix.
