Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers took a shot at U.S. President Donald Trump after his team’s 144-118 loss to the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center on Friday. It was a pretty bad showing by the Bucks and in his postgame press conference, head coach Doc Rivers stated his team played a “Trump” game.
“A Trump game is what I would call it, where just keep lying and making mistakes and then you forget the thing you did the day before,” Rivers said. “That’s how the game felt.”
Rivers isn’t the first to call Trump a liar and he won’t be the last. These two were on good terms at one point, having played golf together in the past, but their relationship has gone completely south.
Rivers has thrown shade at Trump from time to time, like when he claimed he was looking forward to doing his Black job back in preseason. He was referring to Trump stating that illegal immigrants were taking Black jobs. Rivers also reiterated his support for Kamala Harris at the time but the election didn’t go the way the two of them wanted.
Trump won the election decisively, an outcome that shocked many, including Rivers. He admitted back in November that he was disappointed but added he would be cheering for Trump now.
“Donald Trump is our president and we’re going to have to support him,” Rivers said. “We want him to do the best job for the country at the end of the day. Did I like that rally (at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 28)? No. Do I like some of the things that he does? No. But now he’s getting a second chance to be a better president than he was the first time and I hope he is. I’m cheering for him. I really am.”
Well, it would appear Trump’s actions since taking over have not gone down too well with Rivers considering the shot he took at him. With the way things are going, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if he continues to throw shade at the President. Trump has never been one to shy away from a war of words so this could get ugly at some point.
Getting back to this game, it was the three-pointer that doomed the Bucks, as the Spurs went a ridiculous 24-50 from beyond the arc. You’re almost certainly going to get blown out when the opponent shoots that well and that is exactly what happened.
Rivers wasn’t happy with how his team defended and they need to be better moving forward. The Bucks have now lost two in a row and three of their last four to drop to 26-20 on the season. Rivers needs to figure out a way to get his team back on track sooner rather than later.
The Bucks are in action next against the Memphis Grizzlies at Fiserv Forum on Sunday at 8:30 PM ET. The Grizzlies blew them out 122-99 when the teams last met on Oct. 31, 2024, and the Bucks will have to bring their A-game if they are to avoid another defeat.
