The Minnesota Timberwolves suffered arguably their worst loss of the 2024-25 season on Saturday, as the Detroit Pistons beat them 119-105 at Little Caesars Arena. The Timberwolves were down by as many as 24 points at one stage and Anthony Edwards appears to be getting increasingly frustrated by the minute.
The Star Tribune’s Chris Hine reported that Edwards declined to speak with the media after the loss. This is the second time he has done it this month, although they appear to be for very different reasons.
The first instance was on Dec. 8 after a game against the Golden State Warriors. Edwards didn’t speak then because the NBA had fined him for cursing in his postgame media sessions but it’s safe to say that was not the case this time.
Edwards has cut a frustrated figure of late amid the Timberwolves’ struggles and he had a right to be upset after this loss to the Pistons. The two-time All-Star erupted for a career-high 53 points (16-31 FG) and also put up six rebounds and two assists but they still got blown out.
To say he got little to no help from his teammates would be an understatement. Timberwolves players not named Edwards scored 52 points combined against the Pistons and shot 18-49 from the field. You’re not going to win too many games when this happens.
It was perhaps for the better that Edwards didn’t speak to the press as who knows what might have come out of his mouth. The 23-year-old already received a ton of backlash for his comments after the 118-115 loss to the Boston Celtics on Thursday.
Edwards went on a lengthy rant about facing double teams and came across as very immature. He stated he didn’t want to just pass the ball all night, and he certainly didn’t do a lot of passing against the Pistons. To be fair to him, he could have gotten some more assists, but his teammates were ice-cold.
Back in November, Edwards had ruthlessly called out the Timberwolves for being soft and that had seemingly gotten a reaction out of the team. They’re now slumping again, though, and it’s hard to be optimistic about their prospects for this season.
Trading away Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo is looking like a colossal mistake and you wonder if it might lead to Edwards asking out at some point. He is in the first year of a five-year, $244 million deal, so he’s not going anywhere soon, but if the Timberwolves don’t right the ship, he could start considering his options.
While the Timberwolves are struggling, the Pistons are soaring. After spending years at the bottom or near the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference, they have managed to rediscover that winning formula.
This win over the Timberwolves was the Pistons’ eighth in their last 11 games and they have now improved to 17-18 on the season. They’re not the pushovers they once were and will look to get to .500 when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers at Little Caesars Arena on Monday at 7 PM ET.
As for the Timberwolves, they’ll look to avoid dropping under .500 when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers at Target Center on Monday at 8 PM ET.
