Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has solidified himself as one of the NBA’s elite players, and with his continued success comes the inevitable scrutiny from critics. Among the criticisms, the “free-throw merchant” label has gained traction, particularly as his ability to get to the foul line remains a cornerstone of his offensive dominance.

But, according to Clemente Almanza of the OKC Thunder Wire, Gilgeous-Alexander remains unfazed by such narratives, focusing instead on the efficiency and impact of his game.

“None at all. In the past couple of years, I led the NBA in drives. So I think naturally, I’m going to get fouled on drives. Usually, you get fouled on drives more than jump shots. I think that’s just a natural part of the game.”

“And then I learned a few tricks through the trade along my way. I’ve turned it into a skill a little bit. As far as what people say, I don’t really care. As long as it’s efficient offense and my team wins, I’ll get it done.”

Now in his third straight MVP-caliber season, the Oklahoma City Thunder star has propelled his team to the top of the Western Conference standings with a remarkable 32-6 record. His scoring averages remain stellar, with 31.5 points per game this season on an efficient 52.7% shooting from the field and 35.8% from three-point range. This dominance on the court, however, has not shielded him from criticism, particularly regarding his ability to draw fouls and earn free throws.

Despite the noise, Gilgeous-Alexander views his frequent trips to the charity stripe as an essential part of his skill set rather than an exploit. This season, Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 7.8 free-throw attempts per game, a slight dip from previous seasons but still an integral part of his game.

Comparatively, his career average stands at 6.8 attempts, with a career-high 10.9 attempts during the 2022-23 season. While some fans see his free-throw reliance as a flaw, the Thunder star and his teammates view it as a testament to his ability to penetrate defenses and create contact.

Moreover, Gilgeous-Alexander’s effectiveness at the free-throw line is undeniable. This season, he’s converting 89.3% of his free throws, underscoring his status as one of the league’s most reliable shooters from the stripe. His proficiency at the line has not only contributed to his scoring totals but also cemented his reputation as a player who can deliver under pressure.

For Gilgeous-Alexander, criticisms like the “free-throw merchant” label are distractions that he refuses to entertain. His primary focus remains on leading the Thunder to success, and his ability to draw fouls is simply another tool in his arsenal.

In the grand scheme of things, getting to the free-throw line is a hallmark of elite scorers. For Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it’s not about silencing the critics but about continuing to perform at an MVP level and guiding the Thunder to new heights. If anything, the criticism only underscores how dominant and impactful he has become.
