Jaden Ivey’s short stint with the Chicago Bulls has turned into one of the most unusual and concerning storylines of the season, blending injury frustration, personal beliefs, and off-court controversy.

According to Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic, Ivey believed he was ready to return far earlier than the Bulls’ medical staff allowed. After being traded from Detroit in February, he appeared in just four games, averaging 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. The team quickly shut him down to focus on strengthening his surgically repaired left knee.

Ivey did not agree with that approach.

He maintained that he had been playing through similar discomfort all season with the Detroit Pistons and felt capable of continuing. After two weeks of rehab, he pushed for a return. The Bulls, on the other hand, remained cautious and extended their recovery timeline.

The situation took a strange turn during practice. Ivey banged knees with forward Leonard Miller, which caused swelling in his left knee. Although the swelling later subsided, the incident reinforced the team’s concerns. That is when Ivey made a statement that quickly gained attention.

“I said, ‘I’m ready. Jesus healed my knee.”

From the Bulls’ perspective, that was not a medical clearance. The organization opted for an MRI instead and officially ruled him out for the remainder of the season on March 26. Four days later, he was waived. The decision did not come in isolation.

Ivey’s time in Chicago coincided with a series of controversial social media posts and livestreams. He sparked backlash after calling Catholicism ‘a false religion’ and making anti-LGBTQ comments. He also publicly criticized players across the league, including Stephen Curry.

The Bulls’ move to waive him was later explained by head coach Billy Donovan, who pointed to ‘conduct detrimental to the team.’ Ivey pushed back, insisting his release was tied to his religious views rather than his behavior as a teammate. The situation has only escalated since.

Ivey went on multiple livestreams, sharing deeply personal details about his life. He said he had struggled with addiction and past trauma, including abuse during childhood. He also revealed that he had experienced suicidal thoughts, describing how close he came to harming himself before pulling back.

At the same time, his personal life appeared to unravel. He claimed his wife and family had stopped communicating with him, with relatives allegedly calling him ‘psycho’ for his recent actions and statements.

From a basketball standpoint, the fall has been steep. Ivey was once viewed as a key young guard with scoring and playmaking upside. Now, his NBA future is uncertain. Despite that, he has stated he is willing to play anywhere, whether in the NBA, overseas, or alternative leagues.

This entire episode raises difficult questions. Ivey believed he was ready, but the Bulls disagreed. And everything that followed, from the ‘Jesus healed my knee’ comment to the social media fallout, pushed the situation beyond basketball.
