Kevin Durant’s future with the Phoenix Suns has been under intense speculation for months now, but a new report suggests that staying in the Valley might still be on the table. According to Logan Murdock of The Ringer, league sources indicate Durant is open to returning to Phoenix next season—despite swirling trade rumors and a turbulent season that has left the Suns outside the playoff picture.
“The book isn’t closed on Durant returning to the Suns next season. League sources suggest that Durant, who will be eligible for a two-year, $122 million extension this offseason, would be open to a return. Booker says he’d be excited to continue playing with his idol.”
That last line carries weight. Devin Booker has long admired Durant and has said publicly that playing alongside him is a dream come true. The chemistry between the two has been one of the few bright spots in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign for Phoenix.
The Suns currently sit 11th in the Western Conference with a 35-40 record and just seven games remaining. They are one game out of the 10th seed and a spot in the Play-In Tournament, meaning even postseason hopes are hanging by a thread.
Durant, 36, has continued to show he remains one of the best scorers in the game. He’s averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on absurd efficiency—52.7% shooting from the field and 43.0% from three-point range. He’s been reliable and elite, but the Suns’ flawed roster construction has left him and Booker carrying too much of the load.
The Big 3 experiment with Durant, Booker, and Bradley Beal has clearly not worked. Injuries, lack of depth, and poor defensive cohesion have plagued the team. And with Beal still owed over $160 million over the next three years—and possessing a full no-trade clause—it’s not easy for Phoenix to pivot.
Moving on from Beal would require mutual interest and significant cooperation, but many believe that’s the only path toward building a more balanced and functional roster around Durant and Booker.
For Durant, it all began to unravel earlier in the season when the Suns reportedly explored sending him back to Golden State in a blockbuster deal.
The former Warriors superstar was blindsided by the move and made it known that he simply wanted to finish the season, then reassess in the offseason.
Multiple reports suggest KD has eyes on Houston. The Rockets are on the verge of contention with a promising young core (Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson) and surplus draft picks. Also, there’s growing buzz around San Antonio that a Durant-Victor Wembanyama-De’Aaron Fox trio could be in the world.
And, after reportedly trading Luka Doncic, Dallas is rumored to be targeting Durant to remain competitive and relevant. Boston is also reportedly in the mix and has the assets to go all in.
Still, if the Suns make the right moves, Durant is not necessarily done in Phoenix. He’s open to staying—if they can restructure the roster, bring in real depth, and make a legitimate push in the West next year. The ball is now in Phoenix’s court.
