The Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies had a tense clash on Monday night which saw the Grizzlies pick up a 120-118 win over the struggling Suns. The 30-35 franchise is lagging well behind the injury-ridden Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Race in what’s turned out to be a shockingly disappointing season.

The Grizzlies are flying high as a top-four seed, with their players feeling themselves against the Suns. Rookie Cam Spencer was trash-talking Kevin Durant and the Suns, with leaked audio showing these exchanges and how Devin Booker also got involved.

Cam Spencer: (After Durant draws a foul) “Oh my God.”

Desmond Bane: “What you on (to Durant)?”

Kevin Durant: (At the free throw line) “I ain’t arguing with y’all. Cooking *****. The f**k are y’all talking about?”

Cam Spencer: “I don’t give a f**k.”

Kevin Durant: “Sit your drunk ass down (to fan).”

Devin Booker: “Soft ass *****, the f**k? (To Spencer after a bucket)”

This was a tense clash where Durant did indeed cook his opponents. He scored 35 points (11-24 FG) with five rebounds and five assists, while teammate Devin Booker contributed 26 points (9-21 FG), nine rebounds, and six assists. Unfortunately, the third-best contributor in Bradley Beal’s absence was Tyus Jones with 12 points (4-9 FG), so the Suns didn’t have enough to overcome the Grizzlies.

Ja Morant was absent from the on-court trash-talk but led his team with his performance, dropping 29 points (9-13 FG) and 12 assists. Cam Spencer was talking crazy because he came off the bench to be the team’s second-leading scorer with 16 points (5-9 FG) and three steals. Desmond Bane had a quiet 10 points (4-11 FG) and seven rebounds.

Durant and Spencer even got into a scuffle during the game, as the rookie guard was clearly getting under the skin of the eighth-leading scorer in NBA history. Spencer might be a rookie but he spent four years in college and is a 24-year-old who won a national championship with Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies in 2024.

Durant is averaging 26.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists this season, potentially being in line for an All-NBA selection if the Suns were even remotely competitive. Spencer is averaging 4.5 points on 39.1% from three on a two-way contract after being selected with the 53rd pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Grizzlies.

Performances like these will help Spencer solidify a full-time NBA contract for next season, whether with the Grizzlies or somewhere else. He showed tenacity by jawing at legends of the game like Durant, and this will boost his stock as a fearless agitator, a mold that always has room in the NBA if your on-court play can back it up.

Durant’s future is a little more uncertain in terms of the destination, as many expect him to leave the Suns in the summer after this disastrous season. He’ll be on an expiring contract next year, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Suns move on from him and how they salvage their franchise going forward.
