The Denver Nuggets won the first championship in their team’s history last season, with Nikola Jokic helping a dream come true for the millions of fans of the organization. He reflected upon lifting the title, revealing that he felt more relief than joy after the title win because he knew what it meant to fans of the franchise.
“When we won the championship, they showed us videos of people celebrating in their homes. We affect so many people just by playing basketball, so our goal should be to make other people happy. When we won the championship, I was like, I felt more relief than joy.”
Many players likely feel relief in one way or the other when they win a title, but the reason for it could be different. Some players may feel relief because it could’ve been a high-pressure season that somehow ended in victory, similar to the sense of relief the 2016 Cavaliers would’ve felt after winning the title. For others, it’s the pure and unbridled joy of scaling the mountaintop in basketball.
Jokic had one of the greatest playoff runs we’ve seen in recent memory to clinch the title last year. After narrowly missing out on regular season MVP, he went crazy in the playoffs, averaging 30.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists. He led the playoffs in almost every major category, cementing his status as one of the modern greats of the sport.
Nikola Jokic Names The Best Players In The NBA Right Now
It’s very rare to see a full-length Jokic interview hit social media, but thankfully Michael Porter Jr. hooked all us fans up with an inside look on who Jokic is by getting the Finals MVP to come on his podcast. During the podcast, MPJ asked Jokic about the best players in the NBA. The Nuggets center named a mix of young and old stars while answering.
“I think I’m gonna say, Joel, Luka, you have to put KD and LeBron there. Even though they are a little bit older I think they can still perform. Steph… and then you have Tatum, [Anthony Edwards], Giannis… I think it’s really impossible to say. Maybe you like some other player more than some like his game but I think it’s really hard to put that top five or even top 10, to be honest.”
Jokic listed out a nice group of people. It’s interesting to see how he named Joel Embiid first, given their high-profile competitive rivalry since the 2020-21 season. They’ve won the last three MVPs, with Embiid looking like the favorite for one this season.
Jokic also named his close friend Luka Doncic in the list, who’s proven his status as one of the top-five players in the NBA throughout this season. Naming legends such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry before the likes of Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo was a little odd, but this is Jokic’s list.
