Kyrie Irving’s future with the Brooklyn Nets hangs in limbo even as the guard seeks a contract extension. According to his agent, concrete discussions are yet to materialize between both parties.

The polarising guard may have been shouldering the heavy load in Kevin Durant’s absence after the latter suffered an MCL sprain, but he has been in the spotlight for the wrong reasons as well, starting off with the promotion of an anti-semitic film on Twitter and later dealt with the repercussions of his actions and one of them was his suspension.

One NBA executive believed no franchise would be ready to offer Irving a deal beyond a couple of years. Per Heavy:

“There is going to be a very small list of teams with competing offers for Kyrie this summer and no one is going to give him anything more than two years. That was what the whole problem was with Kyrie and the Nets last summer, it was the number of years he was going to get. He wanted a full five, they wanted two or three. Now, he is going to have to take what they give him.”

Earlier, his agent and stepmother, Shetellia Irving, shed light on his contract extension. Per Bleacher Report, she said:

“Around Kyrie and staying with the Nets? I have reached out to the Nets regarding this. We have had no significant conversations to date. The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension, which means the ball is in the Nets’ court to communicate now if their desire is the same.”

At the time of writing, Irving averages 26.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.2 assists this season. He is in the final year of his deal, and should there be no extension, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2022-23.

Kyrie Irving To The Los Angeles Lakers?

While the Los Angeles Lakers have been linked to almost every big name in the league who is available to be traded, Kyrie Irving, as their target does make sense on most fronts.

Potentially, the Lakers could land Irving in a sign-and-trade if they decide to take the star route. Earlier, NBA analyst Howard Beck of Sports Illustrated predicted that he would end up with the Lakers in free agency.

The Nets seem content to finish this season with their current core, including the perpetual distraction in the No. 11 jersey. But this is now an all-or-nothing campaign. Unless the Nets win it all, it’s hard to see them re-signing Irving next summer. It’s also hard to see much of a market for him, given his recent history. We do know LeBron James would welcome a reunion, though.

Irving has played and won an NBA championship with LeBron James during their time with the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the veteran already declaring Anthony Davis as the numero uno in the days to come, it would make sense for a reunion.

His perimeter shooting and shot creation will surely add more teeth to the Lakers’ offense, and only time will tell if he does indeed go from being a Net to a Laker.
