It’s been a busy summer for the Lakers. While the team has been completely ignoring the sweepstakes for Damian Lillard and James Harden, they’ve gone all-out trying to add more depth to what they already have.
So far, the new additions include Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Cam Reddish, and Taurean Prince. But according to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, they will also be adding a big man to the roster before it’s all said and done.
“Pelinka says the Lakers plan to sign another big with their 14th roster spot ahead of training camp.”

While the market is still somewhat limited, there are a few options for the Lakers to consider. If Pelinka wants to go cheap, he could sign someone like Nerlens Noel or even Bol Bol if he ends up not going to Phoenix. The best option, however, is probably Christian Wood. The 6-10 big man has gotten flack for his shortcomings defensively but he is someone who can score points in bunches for the Lakers, who are already pretty solid on defense.
It remains to be seen how much Wood would cost, but the price can’t be too steep, given that he’s still unsigned over a week into free agency. If LA is able to acquire Wood on a team-friendly deal, it would cap off what many believe has been a solid summer for the Lake Show.
Did The Lakers Get Better This Offseason?
The Lakers did not make the big splash many fans were hoping for, but one could argue they didn’t need a major changeup after making the Conference Finals this May. Instead of getting more top-heavy, the Lakers committed to expanding their depth which will no doubt help them keep their stars fresh and ready to play come the spring.
“Acquiring Vincent, elevating your backcourt play. Do they need an additional big body, absolutely,” said Stephen A. Smith. “But I think when you look at the fact that they walk into this season with a level of continuity as opposed to looking for it and searching for it by disrupting your team and making wholesale changes mid-way like they did this past season. I think that’s a plus.”
Obviously, the Lakers still have a long way to go and nothing is promised in the NBA. But, overall, it’s hard not to be impressed with what they’ve been able to do this summer.
Let’s just hope, for their sake, that the signings all pan out and the Lakers can play in a position of strength all season long.
