Robert Horry is the most successful NBA player in the modern era in terms of championships, he has seven rings. And he got them on three different teams, winning with the Rockets, the Lakers, and the Spurs.
Horry was a key piece on those teams, too, hitting big shots in clutch moments, but the superstars on those teams were the ones who carried the load. Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, and Tim Duncan all won two or more championships with Horry, and he answered which one he’d pick to start a franchise.
“If I’m going to start a team I got to go with Shaq because Shaq was so freaking dominant,” Horry said. “You look at the year he won MVP, I don’t think there was a person in the world that could guard him.”
Horry also explained why he didn’t choose Duncan, saying, “I know everybody in San Antonio thinks I am a San Antonio hater because I don’t pick Tim, but Tim was a hell of a player,” Horry said. “I’m not going to take Tim Duncan because he’s younger than me. I ain’t going with anyone younger than me.”

This is an interesting question, and probably one that doesn’t have a right answer. Tim Duncan won the most championships out of the three, and he is undisputedly the greatest at his position. But he never enjoyed dominance like Shaquille O’Neal, who won three straight along with three Finals MVPs. Hakeem Olajuwon is also an all-time NBA legend, one that Horry rates higher than Duncan.
Robert Horry Said Hakeem Olajuwon Was 20 Times Better Than Tim Duncan
Tim Duncan gets underrated by fans a lot, many don’t remember how good the Big Fundamental was. He is also one of the most decorated NBA players of all time. But Horry, despite playing next to him, said Olajuwon was a lot better than him.
“Dream is 20 times better than Tim Duncan,” he said on ESPN’s The Jump. “I played with both. I know the work ethic of both so I’ve seen it live. Kobe is the best. I have been in the gym with both, I know what both brought to practice.”
These aren’t straightforward opinions, and many people have questioned Horry’s bias in his picks. But it’s safe to say that if the choice is between Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Tim Duncan, there can be no wrong answer.
