Shannon Sharpe wasn’t exactly swimming in cash when he entered the NFL in 1990, so when a woman he went out to a restaurant with tried to order lobster, he made it clear what he’d be expecting from her later that night.

“This was in 1990,” Sharpe said on Nightcap with Unc and Ocho. “I met this young lady, and she’s like, ‘We gonna go out.’ I was like, ‘Okay.’ Now Ocho, mind you I’m only making ($63,500).”

At the time, Sharpe had quite a few expenses as he had to pay rent and finance his girlfriend’s education, while also sending money to his family back home. So, he decided he wouldn’t order anything fancy, in case the woman so.

“I think I got something (that) probably cost like $30-40,” Sharpe continued. “And so Ocho, she had the menu and she just looking. I’m like, ‘Damn, what she gonna order?’ I say, ‘You gonna go ahead, you gonna order something?’ She says, ‘I’m tryna figure out what go with lobster?’ I say, ‘Condoms. I say because if you order that, we gonna have sex tonight.”

Co-host Chad Ochocinco fell off his chair upon hearing the story. Sharpe hilariously added that she didn’t order lobster after he said it, and they never met again. From the woman’s standpoint, she probably thought an NFL player wouldn’t have an issue with her ordering something like lobster, but Sharpe says he didn’t have a lot of money.

How Much Did Shannon Sharpe Earn As A Rookie?

Sharpe is now a very wealthy man who is also an NFL Hall of Famer. No one could have seen that coming, though, when he was drafted in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft.

Being drafted that low meant he wasn’t supposed to amount to much and also that he wasn’t going to be paid a lot in his rookie year. The 55-year-old revealed during this episode that he got a signing bonus of $22,500 while first-round picks were getting $1 million.

To go with that signing bonus, Sharpe actually got $73,500 as his salary that season, along with $37,500 as a roster bonus and $15,000 as a workout bonus, as per Spotrac. So, he earned $148,500 as a rookie, which was still a decent amount.

He would go on to play 15 seasons in total in the NFL and earned $22.3 million during that time. You wonder how much more he would have gotten had he played today.

Shannon Sharpe Wouldn’t Believe That Chad Ochocinco Beat LeBron James In A 1-On-1 Game

Sharpe and Ochocinco have proven to be a great pairing, and their show has quickly become very popular among NFL fans. The two often go off track with their conversations, as you can see from here, and in one instance, Ochocinco made some bold claims.

He said he beat LeBron James 21-17 in a 1-on-1 game, but Sharpe didn’t believe a word. Ochocinco went on to state that NBA players like Carmelo Anthony and Russell Westbrook used to come to train with him to prepare for the season, and he’d beat them too.

The 45-year-old also claimed he can play in the NBA right now and would win Sixth Man of the Year. Needless to say, Sharpe wasn’t buying it at all and told him he was too old to do anything now.
