James Wiseman was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Though he has not had much playing time with the Golden State Warriors this year, there is no doubt that Wiseman still has some upside going forward due to his athletic gifts and shooting abilities.

Since he was a raw prospect coming into the league, a win-now team like the Golden State Warriors was clearly not the best option for James Wiseman in terms of fit. In fact, Stephen Curry admitted that James Wiseman wasn’t going to get an opportunity with the Warriors, noting that it was hard to “find minutes” for the young center. The Warriors notably traded James Wiseman to the Detroit Pistons in a four-team trade.

“It’s a guy I want to see figure it out and have an opportunity. I know it’s been said, but it wasn’t going to be here…It was tough to find minutes for him.”

There is no doubt that the Detroit Pistons are a much better fit for James Wiseman. He will be able to have the playing time to develop and grow through his mistakes, and hopefully, he develops into a great player in the future.

Steve Kerr Believes That Injuries And Inexperience Are The Reason James Wiseman Didn’t Work Out With Warriors

Warriors coach Steve Kerr has previously claimed that “the injuries and the inexperience” combined with his previous position on a championship-level team were the reasons for James Wiseman’s lack of success with the Warriors

“I think between the injuries and the inexperience coming into a team like ours that is fighting for championships. Playing with a group that has been together for a long time, it was just difficult for me to give James the runway that he needed. He was great every single day, came to work with a great attitude, a positive spirit. He’s everything you look for in a young player in terms of his approach and his talent. But, the timing was difficult just given what he needed and where we are as a franchise.”

It remains to be seen how well James Wiseman will do in the future. He could still become a solid player, and with more playing time, Wiseman could develop into a good offensive center.

At this point, it is clear that the best move for both parties was for the Golden State Warriors to move James Wiseman. They got a solid veteran in Gary Payton II back, while Wiseman got to move to a new franchise and get a real opportunity to play. The Warriors are a championship contender, and they clearly did not have the time to develop a raw big man.
