A lot of top stars in the NBA have their sneakers sold with their name on them and become a part of their brand. This is mainly for the superstars, most NBA players don’t get signature shoes. As such, sometimes other players will wear their teammate’s sneakers, or on rare occasions, those of their opponents.

One team that is not allowing it to happen though, is the Miami Heat. Since acquiring Jimmy Butler and building this current core with him, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro, the Heat have regularly been a contender in the Eastern Conference playoffs. This means they have gone up against the Milwaukee Bucks a lot, and as such, don’t allow their players to wear Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s sneakers.

“Tyler Herro said the Heat banned Giannis Antetokounmpo’s sneakers from everyone’s feet several years ago when they faced the Bucks in the playoffs, but that was by team agreement, not the fiat of one grizzled vet,” The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov wrote.

Tyler Herro came into the NBA before the 2019-2020 season, the year the Miami Heat went all the way to the Finals in the Bubble. In that time, they played Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals, which was their first playoff matchup after 2013. That must be when the team banned the sneakers.

Since then, the Heat and the Bucks have played against each other in the playoffs in 2021, when Milwaukee swept Miami on their way to the championship. And obviously, they are playing in the first round this season, with the series tied at 1-1.

Desmond Bane Started This Conversation By Wearing LeBron James’ Shoes Against Him

This whole topic has come up recently after Desmond Bane admitted that he has to swallow his pride and wear LeBron James’ shoes despite him being an opponent. Bane couldn’t find any shoes as comfortable for him as the LeBron XX’s and he spoke about the situation.

“Nah. I mean, nah, I [wasn’t happy wearing the shoes against LeBron],” said Bane. “But you know, I got to leave my pride to the side and do what’s best for my body and my career.”

It counts as one of basketball’s unwritten rules to not wear someone’s shoes while playing against them, and it seems the Heat are taking it seriously. They’ve won 1 and lost 1 of their last two series to the Bucks, and it remains to be seen how this one plays out.
