The Players Most Likely To Break Klay Thompson’s 3-Point Record

When it comes to shooting, fans all over the world look towards the Golden State pair Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. They have changed the league, after all, with every NBA team looking to shoot threes just like them.

  • Honorable Mention: Kevin Durant

  • 4. Paul George
  • 3. Damian Lillard
  • 2. Klay Thompson
  • 1. Stephen Curry

It is no wonder why the Warriors have been the NBA favorites for the past five seasons at the least. The Golden State Warriors has featured two of the greatest shooters ever in Thompson and Stephen Curry, and have been the driving force behind 3 NBA championships.

Most notably, Klay Thompson broke the NBA record for most threes in a game when he made 14 three-pointers in a single game.

Remarkable. Stephen Curry was the prior record-holder, with 13 three-pointers made. While 14 might be a ton of threes to overcome, here are the five players most likely to overtake Thompson for this incredible record.

Honorable Mention: Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant Officially Announces His Move To The Brooklyn Nets

Durant is a phenomenal three-point shooter, with multiple games of 5 or more threes. Durant is one of the greatest offensive players of all-time, thanks to his complete offensive skill set. His three-point jump shot is deadly, and he can literally pull up from 30 feet with ease.

Durant can get hot, draining threes even with a hand (or two) in his face. What separates Durant from the rest of the league is his incredible height and length. Durant can see over most of his defenders and drain shots with incredible efficiency.

When Durant returns, he might have a chance of draining over 14 three-pointers in a game.

5. Devin Booker

(via USA Today)

Devin Booker is quietly becoming one of the best scoring guards in the league. He has a quick release and can score a ton of points in a short matter of time. Booker is one of the few players who can get hot with his jumper, and go off on any opposition as evident by his iconic 70-point game. To date, we have only seen him drain only 6 threes in a single game. But Booker has improved his shooting every single year and could be a dark horse for chasing Klay’s record.

Booker will likely enter this season more refined, skilled, and matured. At the same time, Booker will have worked on his jump shot to where he can drain three’s at a very high rate. Playing alongside Ricky Rubio, his first true point guard, will allow him to get open easier and drain more threes. Do not overlook Devin Booker as a threat to Klay’s three-point record.

4. Paul George

(via SB Nation)

Paul George is known for his excellent two-way play, thanks to his sweet array of offensive skills and lockdown defense. Yet, many fail to realize how deadly Paul George is from the three-point line. Last season, he managed to drain 10 three-point shots playing alongside ball-dominant point guard Russel Westbrook. It is not beyond reasonability that George can manage five more three-pointers over the course of a game.

George is automatic from three when he is open and can take matters into his own hands when he wants to pull up from three. If George can get hot, he can drain threes at an alarming rate. More so than any other forward, besides an injured Kevin Durant, George is most likely to break Klay’s 3-point record.

3. Damian Lillard

Damian Lillard's Associate Dismisses Recent Trade Rumor While Revealing His Approach To Financial Activity: "He's A Financially Savvy Person That Doesn't Leave A Dime On The Table"

Lillard has steadily become one of the greatest three-point shooters in the game. He is deadly from anywhere on the court, and basically has a normal jump-shot mechanic from 35 feet. He can generate power for his shots with absolute ease, and seems to get more proficient from three as the game tightens.

If Lillard gets hot, he is as unstoppable as you can get. He is efficient from every corner from the three-point line, and is one of the most likely players to break Klay’s NBA record. Making 15 three’s, at the least, is a very difficult thing to do in an NBA game. If one player can do it, it is Dame Lillard.

2. Klay Thompson

(via ABC7 News)

That’s right. Klay is very likely to break his own record. The game he hit 14 three’s, he heated up rather quickly. We have seen how Klay can go on a hot streak where he just doesn’t miss and drains one after another. If Klay can manage at least 4 three-pointers per quarter, he will break his own record. This is very possible considering his ability to heat up as soon as he sees one shot go in.

Klay has all the tools of a top shooter, including perfect mechanics and a quick release. The key to Klay’s shooting? His ability to remain squared at the basket and release with the same picture-perfect form every single time. He is the perfect definition of a shooter who has worked on his form and will return next year from injury with the same jump shot. If he can heat up, Klay will manage to make his record as unattainable as possible.

1. Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry

There is not a better season for Stephen Curry to break this record than this season. Curry will be forced to lead his Golden State squad without an injured Thompson and Kevin Durant, who left in Free Agency. We have seen Curry get hot before, and drain 13 three’s in a single game to set the previous record. We have also seen Curry drain multiple three-pointers in a row, making it look completely effortless.

Steph is as pure a shooter as we’ll ever see again, and we all know how Steph loves to compete with his teammate Klay when it comes to shooting.

Expect Curry to come out guns blazing this season, possibly with a game where he swishes through 15 three-pointers against a helpless opposition. Curry is most likely recognized as the king of the three-pointer, and he might be able to break the NBA record yet again.
