The Luka Doncic trade is still reverberating through the NBA and will continue to do so until the February 6 trade deadline before people can start to move on. However, this trade has led every single star player in the NBA to re-evaluate their position on their respective franchises as Doncic getting traded shows no player is safe.
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards reacted to this decision by the Dallas Mavericks in complete shock after his team’s 114-116 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
“That’s crazy. At 25, they traded probably the best scorer in the NBA. At 25. And he didn’t know about it, so there’s a lot more digging somebody has to do to figure out why he was traded. You don’t just trade him at 25, he just went to the Finals. I feel bad for Luka man. I just saw a YouTuber say that he bought a crib and everything in Dallas. That sucks man, it sucks.”
Edwards then made some funny comments, requesting Timberwolves GM Tim Connelly to not trade him without a heads-up.
“Everybody gets informed. I’m scared. Tim, if you’re gonna trade me let me know dawg. If Luka gets traded, anybody is able to get traded.”
After a reporter informed Edwards that the Wolves have openly said Edwards was a great investment from them, the 23-year-old had another hilarious comment.
“Thank God, I just bought a crib too.”

Edwards has seen how dominant Doncic can be first-hand in the 2024 Playoffs. The Timberwolves came into the Western Conference Finals as favorites with home-court against the Doncic-led Mavericks.
Luka proceeded to shred their league-best defense by averaging 32.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists en route to a gentleman’s sweep and the Mavs’ third Finals appearance in league history.
Edwards is averaging 26.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists this season, hopefully proving to the Wolves he deserves to stay their franchise cornerstone despite the team struggling to a 27-23 record so far this season.
A Trade That Everyone Thought Would Never Happen
Luka’s unmatchable on-court ability is why everyone is shocked because franchises never trade away players who are this generational without them forcing their way out. Nico Harrison went out of his way to move Doncic, specifically to the Lakers, and it’s never stopped being surprising.
If someone discussed player trade values before this trade, I’d argue that Doncic has a top-three value in the NBA behind Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama only. The return the Mavericks got for him is shockingly low, especially when you find out that Rob Pelinka managed to get Harrison to back off an asking price which also included 24-year-old rookie Dalton Knecht and their 2031 first-round pick.
The Mavericks were clearly sick of Doncic behind the scenes and decided to move off him without it becoming a public saga.
This has backfired, as this saga will likely cast a shadow on the Mavericks for the rest of the decade. If Doncic responds to all the narratives about his weight and gets in shape, the Mavericks might have handed another dynastic piece to the Lakers.
