A lot has been made of the relationship between Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Both players were believed to be the future cornerstones of the Dallas Mavericks franchise heading into the 2020s. But their relationship hasn’t yielded much success for the Mavs so far.
The Mavs have not fared better in the playoffs, as Luka and Porzingis have not been able to get the Mavs past the first round. After this year’s playoffs, where Porzingis performed poorly, rumors started to emerge that Porzingis was frustrated with Doncic hogging the ball so much when they play.
Porzingis came out and vehemently denied these rumors, stating that he has no problems with any teammates. Whereas Doncic did nothing but praise Porzingis during the offseason, advocating for the Mavs to utilize him more.
And now, Porzingis himself has come forward and given high praise to his fellow European teammate. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Porzingis spoke about how talented Luka is, and how lucky the Mavericks are to have a superstar of his caliber in the team.
“Every time I think about Luka, I think about the natural talent that he is. The kid is unbelievable. He’s always known what it takes to win.”
Perhaps new Mavs head coach Jason Kidd has changed Porzingis’ mind, at least according to the rumors. KP wanted a trade from the Mavs but believes Kidd can offer him and the Mavericks a fresh start.
Porzingis is considered a unicorn, because of his peculiar combination of size and shooting. Porzingis is a great three-point shooter, something that is very uncommon for players his size.
As for Luka, he is considered one of the most dynamic players to enter the league in recent memory.
Doncic has surpassed the high expectations of him in the last few years, becoming Rookie Of The Year, an All-Star, and an All-NBA player in just 3 seasons. Their combination, if it works out this year, could lead the Mavs into a dynasty.
