Steve Nash is one of the most underrated guards in recent NBA history. Despite being one of the most complete passers in the NBA during his time, Nash isn’t mentioned in the same breath as some of the all-time great point guards in the league.

Nash played in the NBA for almost 20 years, with his stints in Dallas and Phoenix being his most memorable. While Nash always had a solid team around him, he was never able to reach the NBA Finals, something that is consistently held against him.

During his time in Dallas, he had an incredible tandem with fellow NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki. He and Nowitzki were heralded as the future of the franchise. But when the chance to return to Phoenix, the team that drafted him in 1996 came by, he tried getting the Mavs to offer him the same deal, which they didn’t.

Thus came to end Nash and Nowitzki’s partnership. Nash went on to join the Phoenix Suns, where he would enjoy the most successful stint of his career.

By 2012, when he was nearing the end of his career, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers with the hopes of winning an NBA championship. But that never happened, mostly because of the Lakers’ chemistry issues.

Nash was still a superstar during his time in the league and found incredible individual success. He was a multiple-time All-Star and All-NBA player during his stint in the league. But most importantly, he won 2 consecutive MVPs in 2005 and 2006.

The 2005 MVP is marred in controversy, as many fans believe Shaquille O’Neal should have won the MVP after a solid first season with the Miami Heat. One of the people who believe Shaq should have won is Shaq himself.

During an interview last year on Inside the NBA, Shaq asked Steve Nash to see if he had one of the MVP trophies he stole from me in the house. Nash hilariously responded that Shaq couldn’t win MVP because of his inability to make free throws in late-game situations.

Shaq: “Can you show me one of the MVP trophies you stole from me?”

Nash: “It’s hard to give you an MVP since you couldn’t make a free throw down the stretch.”

While Nash wasn’t able to win an NBA championship as a player, he will be hoping to do so as a head coach. Nash became the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets last season, his first coaching job in his career.

Some fans were skeptical of Nash, as he had no prior coaching experience in the past. But others felt that Nash’s individual success as a player meant that star players on the team would respect his word more. So far, Nash has shown that he can be a good coach, with the Nets considered one of the favorites to win the title next year.
