University of Michigan sophomore Franz Wagner has officially declared for the NBA draft, writing in a letter to fans that it was a “tough decision.”
Of course, in the letter, he also throws some shade at his brother, Magic big man Moe, hilariously claiming that if he can make the league, so can anyone.
I’ll be honest … I’m definitely feeling a lot of emotions about it. I’m hopeful, more than anything — as playing in the NBA has been a big dream of mine. It’s something I’ve been working extremely hard for. And after talking with my coaches and my family, I know it’s something I’m ready for. From a basketball perspective, this is the move for me to make right now. (Plus, I mean, if Moe can play in the league — obviously they’ll take anyone.)
Moritz Wagner was drafted in 2018 by the L.A. Lakers, and he’s been a bit of a nomad since, moving from D.C. to Boston, and (most recently) Orlando, serving as a backup center. Through 126 games so far, he has averaged 6.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1 assist per game.
As for Franz, he has become a top-10 college prospect in the nation, posting averages of 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game on 47% shooting. His defense has also been lauded as one of the best in the class.
Needless to say, the stock is up on Franz, and many fans are excited to see if a little, lighthearted sibling rivalry could be in the works.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
