The Los Angeles Lakers have traded D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets and his former teammate Nick Young wants him to stay away. Young took to X on Sunday night after news broke about Russell being traded and had a stern message for him.
“AND STAY OUT… Dnt bring yo a** back to LA.”
Young didn’t mention Russell, who was traded along with Maxwell Lewis and three second-round picks for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, in the post but it’s fairly obvious who that message was for. These two have been beefing for years due to the infamous snitching incident in 2016 and neither party seems too interested in mending fences.
Their relationship wasn’t always this bad, though. Young somewhat took Russell under his wing after the Lakers drafted the latter with the second pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. They were joined at the hip initially, but it all fell apart in March 2016.
At some point, Russell had secretly recorded Young admitting to cheating on his then-fiancee Iggy Azalea. While that was bad enough, the video somehow leaked online and you can see it yourself.
Russell claimed he had no idea how the video leaked but the damage was done. Young and Azalea had announced their engagement on June 1, 2015, and just over a year later on June 19, 2016, they revealed they had split.
Azalea didn’t point to this video as the reason for breaking things off with Young, though. She claimed that she had found out that he had brought another woman into their house when she was away and that was that.
So, Russell’s actions might not have directly caused the split, but Young seems to look at it that way. He has fired plenty of shots at his former teammate over the years and this post was the latest one. Earlier this year, Young called Russell a b**** and he had even expressed a desire to box him in the past.
While Young doesn’t want Russell, who is averaging 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 0.8 steals per game in 2024-25, back in Los Angeles, he will show up there next month. The Nets take on the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on Jan. 17 at 10:30 PM ET, so the one-time All-Star will have no choice but to show up.
Nick Young Claims Lou Williams Lied About Kobe Bryant Shutting Down A Lakers Team Meeting Over His Beef With D’Angelo Russell
Young and Russell’s former teammate Lou Williams appeared on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast this month. In the episode, Williams revealed that Kobe Bryant had shut down a Lakers team meeting over the Young-Russell beef. It was a hilarious story but Young stated on Gil’s Arena that no such thing happened.
“I’m tired of talking about this,” Young said. “It’s cap. I wasn’t near to even talk to the motherf*****… Kobe wasn’t even playing until his 60 game… Been on there with Byron Scott, I get it. He’s probably scared of keeping it real in front of him. I love Lou Will. Lou Will my dog, but that ain’t what happened.”
Young claims he’s tired of talking on this topic but brings it up himself from time to time by taking shots at Russell. The 39-year-old should just keep his mouth shut if he is so annoyed by it. As for Williams, it will be interesting to see if he responds to Young calling him out for lying.
