It’s never easy to make a ranking of the greatest player of all time. There are dozens of factors to take into consideration when putting together a list, and there’s always the subjective factor that may cause some controversies when said ranking is up to debate.
What makes a great player? Is it the individual awards? Is it the stats? Or perhaps Championships are all that matters? What about the intangibles? We could go on and on for hours and we’ll likely never come to a conclusion.
However, we can all agree that some of the players that have come before are, until further notice, the greatest of all time. While that doesn’t mean things can’t change over time, we wouldn’t dare to put some young stars ahead of them just yet.
ESPN, on the other hand, thinks otherwise, as they’ve already ranked Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of legends like Allen Iverson, Isiah Thomas, Kevin McHale, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and even Patrick Ewing.
Don’t get me wrong here. I love Giannis’ game. I’m pretty sure we all do, and when it’s all said and done, I see no reason why he couldn’t be a top-30, hell, even top-10 player in NBA history. He’s got the skills, the talent, and most importantly; the determination to be historically great.
He’s coming off an MVP season and was leading the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the league again before the season was suspended, and let’s take into notice that he’s just 25 years old.
Giannis still hasn’t even reached his prime, which is scary and exciting but is also a two-way street. What if this is it? What if he’s never able to lead a Championship team? Why if – God forbid – he gets hurt?
No disrespect here at all, but hey, let’s not rush things that much. Let the kid play, blossom, and earn that top-30 spot. I’m sure he’ll get there, just not yet.
