Stephen Curry has been busy conducting the annual Curry training camp during the offseason. During a break in the camp, he spoke to the media about the Warriors’ roster and their lack of movement this offseason.
Curry is aware that the Warriors are the only team who haven’t made a single addition to their team yet this offseason. But for him, he is focused on the confidence he built in the current roster’s identity when he saw the team’s performance in the final months of the regular season and playoffs.
“It’s different, for sure, but my confidence is built on the identity we were able to create over the last third of the regular season last year and the playoff journey.”
“We have a really good team.” But Curry agreed on the Warriors’ “need for some pieces to help get us to the next level.”
While Curry reaffirmed his confidence in the current roster, he seems to believe that fresh faces on the roster could bolster their chances in terms of the unpredictability of a new player.
At 28.2 years average roster age, the Warriors are the second-oldest team in the NBA right now. They need to invest in youth to also have some hope for their future beyond Brandin Podziemski and Moses Moody.
Following Kevon Looney’s exit at the beginning of free agency, the Warriors’ front office has been in a gridlock with Jonathan Kuminga over his contract extension, which has caused them to put all their other moves on hold at the moment.
All reports indicate that Jonathan Kuminga has no intention of returning to play for the Warriors, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Curry later indicated that he is optimistic that the Jonathan Kuminga saga could be over before the training camp begins.
“The veteran presence that we have — me, Jimmy (Butler), Draymond (Green) — we understand how to prepare through that uncertainty and hit the ground running in training camp knowing we should have some movement by then. But you control what you can control,” said Curry while addressing the front office’s gridlock with Kuminga.
Considering that even if Kuminga comes back for one season, he will have no plans to stay long term, the Warriors need to add some youth to their roster, as the core of Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green can only carry them for a few more seasons. Curry has given himself two more seasons before he decides whether to retire or not.
And considering how much Curry loves the Warriors, he would certainly understand if the team looks to invest in promising young players so that the Warriors don’t become a bottom-dwelling team when Curry retires.
If they bring a promising young player like Cam Thomas or Josh Giddey to the Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal for Kuminga, then the Warriors will have a present and future to be excited about.
