Some Oklahoma City Thunder players recently took part in a Spelling Bee competition and as you might expect, it didn’t go too well for them. At one point, the players were asked to spell head coach Mark Daigneault’s surname and most of them hilariously failed to get it right.

Alex Caruso: “Daignoult.”
Kenrich Williams: “Pass.”

Ajay Mitchell was the only one who got it right straight away while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander needed a couple of tries. You’d think that with Daigneault having been the head coach since Nov. 2020, the players who have been there for a while like the two Williams’ would get it right, but they didn’t.
The fact that a rookie like Mitchell did it but they couldn’t, is quite hilarious. I’d say Daigneault should make this lot run some extra miles during practice as punishment. Mark Daigneault Looks To Lead The Thunder To The Promised Land In 2024-25
The Thunder were one of the biggest surprises of the 2023-24 season, finishing atop the standings in the West with a 57-25 record. Their surprising success led to Daigneault being named Coach of the Year, after finishing runner-up for the award the year before.
Daigneault then led the Thunder to their first playoff series victory since 2016, as they swept the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round. That set up a clash with the Dallas Mavericks in the Conference Semifinals and while the Thunder were the favorite entering the series, they would lose in six games.
It was a disappointing end to a season that had promised so much, but there were still plenty of positives to take from it. The Thunder’s front office then chose to be bold in the offseason by trading for Alex Caruso and signing Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency. I thought those moves made them one of the biggest winners in the offseason and they look set to be one of the very best teams in the NBA in 2024-25.
I would have the Thunder as the favorite to get the top spot in the West and the only way they won’t be in contention for it is injuries. As for concerns regarding this team, I have just one as of now, and it is that they’re not experienced enough for postseason success.
Their core is still fairly young and last season was the first time they made it to the playoffs. We have seen very talented young teams go through some growing pains before they have success in the postseason and it might end up being the same story here. Daigneault is the man tasked with ensuring that won’t be the case and it’ll be interesting to see how far he can take this group in 2024-25.
