Joel Embiid, the charismatic center for the Philadelphia 76ers, paid heartfelt tribute to the late Dikembe Mutombo during the Sixers’ recent media day. Embiid, who was present for the event, expressed his deep admiration for Mutombo, highlighting the profound impact the Hall of Famer had both on and off the basketball court.

“I mean, I just heard about it, you know, my condolences to his family. So it’s a sad day, especially for us Africans and really the whole world, because, you know, other than what he’s accomplished on the basketball court, I think he was even better off the court.”

“You know, those are some of the guys, he’s one of the guys that I look up to as far as having an impact, not just on the court, but off the court. He’s done a lot of great things. So I mean, that’s, it was a role model of mine. So yeah, like I said, it is a sad day, and yeah.”

Embiid’s admiration for Mutombo extends beyond his on-court achievements. This sentiment echoes the sentiments of many who knew Mutombo as a pillar of generosity and compassion. Mutombo founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997, which has significantly improved health, education, and quality of life in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The foundation’s efforts include building a 170-bed hospital in Kinshasa, which has treated nearly half a million people, regardless of their ability to pay.

Mutombo, who passed away at the age of 58 after battling brain cancer, was not only renowned for his defensive prowess in the NBA but also for his extensive humanitarian efforts. Over his illustrious 18-year career, Mutombo established himself as one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in basketball history.

Playing for teams such as the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets, he amassed impressive career statistics, including 12,359 rebounds and 3,289 blocks—ranking him second only to Hakeem Olajuwon in NBA history.

During his time on the court, Mutombo was known for his signature finger wag—a playful gesture he used to celebrate blocks and assert his dominance defensively. This dual legacy of athletic excellence and humanitarianism is what makes Mutombo a true role model for Embiid and countless others.

Joel Embiid’s own journey as an African player in the NBA mirrors Mutombo’s path in many ways. Both players have faced unique challenges and have used their platforms to advocate for positive change. Embiid, who has become one of the league’s most dominant centers, often speaks about the importance of role models like Mutombo who pave the way for future generations.

The loss of Dikembe Mutombo is felt deeply within the basketball community and beyond. Mutombo’s contributions as the NBA’s first Global Ambassador were instrumental in promoting the sport worldwide and supporting various charitable causes. His ability to connect with people, coupled with his infectious smile and deep, booming voice, made him a beloved figure across generations of basketball fans.

Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner, also paid tribute to Mutombo, describing him as “larger than life” and commending his dedication to making a positive impact globally.  As the basketball world mourns Mutombo’s passing, Joel Embiid’s heartfelt remarks serve as a poignant reminder of the lasting influence one individual can have.

Mutombo’s legacy of excellence, generosity, and leadership continues to inspire current and future players, ensuring that his contributions to the sport and society will never be forgotten.

In honoring Dikembe Mutombo, Joel Embiid not only celebrates a basketball legend but also affirms the importance of using one’s success to uplift others. “It is a sad day,” Embiid concluded, encapsulating the collective grief and respect felt by fans, players, and the global community for a man who truly embodied the spirit of both a champion and a humanitarian.
