Derrick Rose‘s future in the NBA has been the subject of speculation after his latest post. After being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, Rose posted a video on Instagram teasing an announcement in the near future, with him holding a rose, which has become a symbol of his due to the eponymous nature he shares with it.

Fans began speculating in the comments that Rose might be hinting at a potential retirement after being waived by the Grizzlies and not seemingly having a clear path back to the NBA. Some even asked him to return to the Bulls, or any other team so he could say goodbye to the league the right way.

“Thought this was a retirement post folk don’t scare me like that.”

“Please LORD have the Bulls do right by him….!!!!!”

“Come back to Chicago for one last dance.”

“When DRose retire I’m officially a unc.”

“The Rose that grew from concrete. Will always have love for you and your family. You’ll always be my favorite player of all time.”

“Please don’t let this be what I think it is.”

“Please stay bro one more year it’s all us fans ask… we want a proper way to have our last moments.”

“Thought he was about to announce his retirement .”

“Please don’t do this to us Derrick until you are 40 you were my idol please don’t retire.”

Among the fans who commented on his post, Derrick Rose’s former teammate from the Grizzlies, Ja Morant, simply commented a rose emoji on the post, showing respect to his former teammate and the man many have compared Morant to since he entered the NBA.

Perhaps this could be the year that the former MVP calls time on his career. Morant has struggled to find regular playing time or long-term deals in the NBA for the better part of a decade, and he might want to walk away from the game now rather than face the humiliation of being rejected by other NBA teams instead.

Derrick Rose: Biggest What-If In NBA History

Derrick Rose, to many fans, is perhaps the biggest what-if question in NBA history. Rose entered the league as the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Upon his arrival, he showed why he was such a hyped prospect, winning Rookie of the Year, and becoming a perennial All-Star by his second season in the league.

Rose was developing as a star at a rapid pace, giving many fans hope that he would be the next mercurial superstar to help the Chicago Bulls begin their renaissance after the retirement and exit of Michael Jordan. These hopes would be boosted when Rose made history in 2011.

In the 2010-11 season, Derrick Rose lept over the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kobe Bryant to win the NBA MVP award. He would become the youngest MVP in the history of the league at just 22 years old. After putting up 25.0 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds that season, Rose earned the award for himself.

However, a tragic injury in 2012 would begin his downfall, as he tore his ACL against the Philadelphia 76ers. Since then, he returned, and while he was good, he was a shell of himself and became injury-prone. The pile-up of injuries meant he became an inconsistent and unreliable performer.

Rose would spend the latter half of the 2010s bouncing around to teams like the Knicks, Timberwolves, Cavaliers, and Pistons. After a revitalizing second stint with the Knicks from 2021 to 2023, Rose signed with the Grizzlies. Fans were excited to see him play alongside Ja Morant, whom many have compared to Rose since 2019.

Unfortunately, due to injuries and suspensions, Rose and Morant didn’t get to play together, and with Rose being waived by the Grizzlies, that may never come to pass. Regardless of what Rose chooses to do in his career, there is no denying he will be remembered by fans as an incredible star who could have had it all.
