The 2024 NBA Draft began as expected on Wednesday night after the Atlanta Hawks made their pick at No. 1. As scouts have been predicting for months, 6’8″ Frenchman Zaccharie Rishacher was the first name to get called and the official pick for the Hawks.

As a star for the JL Bourg in France’s LNB Élite league, he recently climbed to the top of the draft board for his shooting, size, and defensive quickness. He averaged 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 35.2 percent from three last season.
Risacher joins an elite backcourt with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray on the Hawks, but it remains to be seen how long the arrangement will last. After another disappointing season, the Hawks are on the verge of collapse and a breakout stretch from Zaccharie could be all that GM Landry Fields needs to see in order to pull the plug and start from scratch.
Risacher, who joins a growing list of international rising stars, is not projected to be a generational talent. And while that’s unusual for a No. 1 overall pick, the Hawks still feel like he is someone who can make an immediate impact. If not, they will give the rookie all the time he needs to grow and develop his game.
