LaVar Ball has done it again, lighting up the internet with one of the wildest and most viral moments of the NBA offseason. The outspoken patriarch of the Ball family recently took to TikTok in a rapid-fire NBA player comparison segment, where he went through a gauntlet of star matchups. But none stirred up the pot quite like his jaw-dropping take on Ja Morant.
When asked to choose between Victor Wembanyama and Ja Morant, LaVar paused, cracked a grin, and said with a straight face:
“I have to go with Ja Morant… cause he might shoot me.”
The internet exploded.
The comment was not just brutally bold, it revived the infamous gun-related controversy surrounding Morant, who was suspended twice in 2023 for brandishing firearms on Instagram Live.
Even though Morant has since kept his nose clean, Ball’s joke instantly rekindled the memes and madness that haunted the Memphis Grizzlies star for nearly a full year.
LaVar didn’t stop there. When the question shifted to Ja Morant versus Jaylen Brown, he doubled down, saying:
“Ja Morant, cause he’s a wild guy. I gotta watch out for him.”
LaVar also gave his signature Big Baller spin on several other comparisons earlier in the video. Between Donovan Mitchell and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, he picked Shai “because he won the championship.”
Between Shai and Anthony Edwards? Edwards, “because he got a Sprite commercial.”
Between Edwards and Wembanyama? Wemby — “because he can do it all, the 7-foot man.”
And when asked to choose between Wemby and Trae Young, LaVar replied:
“Victor… cause he way taller than Trae Young.”
These off-the-cuff remarks were vintage LaVar, part humor, part headline-bait, and all confidence. While most NBA insiders and players tread carefully around controversial topics, Ball has no problem poking the bear, or in this case, the Grizzly, with viral punchlines. And for all the drama they stirred, his comments have once again made him the center of the NBA internet.
For context, Ja Morant’s history with guns isn’t something easily forgotten. In March 2023, the explosive guard was suspended for waving a gun during an Instagram Live session while at a nightclub. The incident prompted him to enter a Florida counseling program and meet with Commissioner Adam Silver. He publicly vowed to reform.
But just weeks later, Morant flashed another gun on a friend’s live stream, this time in a car, triggering a massive backlash. The Grizzlies suspended him indefinitely, and the NBA hit him with a 25-game suspension to start the 2023–24 season. Morant returned and stayed clean after that, but the damage to his image lingered. LaVar’s viral jab just reopened that wound.
Yet, in typical Ball fashion, the conversation didn’t stay serious for long. When pitted between Ja Morant and his son Lonzo Ball, LaVar pivoted instantly:
“Oh, you lost it. Lonzo Ball, of course. He’s the world’s greatest point god.”
Even Zion Williamson didn’t stand a chance. “Lonzo,” LaVar declared, “because he is LaVar Ball’s son.”
He even sidestepped a decision between Lonzo and LaMelo by quoting a line from LiAngelo Ball’s viral song “Tweaker,” essentially choosing Gelo in the most bizarre twist of all.
Wait till it gets to the Ja Morant part, I’m actually in tears😭😭 pic.twitter.com/HUsZQcy4Oz

Ironically, LaVar Ball is delivering these takes while recovering from a serious medical condition himself. Earlier this year, it was revealed that LaVar underwent foot amputation due to complications.
But the outspoken basketball dad has been recovering exceptionally well. True to his character, he hasn’t slowed down one bit, still appearing in media, supporting his sons, and making headlines with unapologetic bravado.
Ultimately, LaVar Ball’s comments were equal parts chaotic and comedic. His Ja Morant line might’ve crossed into meme territory again, but it also reignited conversations about how far Ja has come and how far he still has to go in changing the narrative. For now, Ball remains the undisputed king of viral NBA takes, and Morant remains the most memeable player in the league.
