In an appearance on the ‘Point Game Podcast,’ longtime Warriors star Draymond Green revealed a recent conversation he had with team majority owner Joe Lacob. According to Draymond, Lacob said that he envisions him in a coaching role in the future and even suggested that he could take over when Steve Kerr is ready to step down.
“I’m honored man, with the conversations I’ve had with Joe Lacob over the years, and him saying to me like, ‘Yo when you’re done, I could see you one day coaching this team when Steve’s done, like I could see you working with this team. Like I would love to see that.,’” Green said. “That means the world to me because that means the man that owns the organization that I play for, is watching me play basketball and saying, this guy can one day coach my team. Again, big business, these assets are not small man, like you’re going to trust somebody, that’s not small, that’s a big f*cking deal.”
There is no doubt that Draymond Green knows the game well. As a 4x champion, 2x All-NBA player, and former Defensive Player of the Year, he’s got more than enough qualifications to prove his effectiveness as a player.
One thing that Draymond lacks, however, is composure. As a guy who is known for his outbursts, including the time he knocked out his own teammate during practice, it’s hard to believe that he has the patience or poise to serve as anything beyond an assistant coach at the NBA level.
Since the NBA itself had to suspend Draymond, it’s fair to say that he’s crossed the line a number of times and he just cannot have those types of outbursts as a coach on the sidelines. Nevertheless, the Warriors will always believe in their “big three” and Green will always be given the benefit of the doubt no matter how hard things get.
Times Have Changed For The Golden State Warriors
Just a few years ago, the Warriors were at the top of the basketball world as winners of their fourth championship in eight years. During the peak of their run, they destroyed every team in their path and went virtually unchallenged en route to the title.
Over the years, however, things have started to shift and the Warriors’ grip on the West weakened significantly. Between the departure of Kevin Durant and the injuries to Klay Thompson, the Warriors’ decline was slow but they finally hit rock bottom this past season when they failed to come out of the play-in tournament.
Steve Kerr, who has been around since the beginning, tried and failed to get his team into the first round but his job is not in jeopardy at all this summer. As a 4x champion himself (not including his titles as a player), Kerr has the ultimate faith and support from the front office.
Now, it seems they already have a potential replacement for when Kerr calls it quits and there’s probably nothing that either side wants more than to keep working with each other for years to come. For better or worse, Draymond Green is a part of the Warriors’ identity and he’s likely to be involved long after he retires.
