Not a lot went right for Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns during Game 4 of the second-round series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets. Both big men had rough outings and to make matters worse, Gobert even fell over Towns at one stage, when he was trying to help him up.

That was really quite hilarious. Fortunately, neither Gobert nor Towns got injured in any way when this happened, as that would have been disastrous for the Timberwolves. This incident summed up, though, just how bad of a night it was for both of them.

Towns had just 13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal in the contest. He went a woeful 5-18 from the field and was 1-4 from beyond the arc. The 28-year-old did not provide any kind of support offensively to Anthony Edwards, who had a game-high 44 points.

This was the second straight game where Towns didn’t even score 15 points, following his 14-point outing in Game 3. The Timberwolves need their four-time All-Star to step up, or else this round is as far as they’ll go in these playoffs.

As for Gobert, he had 11 points, 14 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block on the night. The 2024 Defensive Player of the Year certainly didn’t play great defense, as the Nuggets shot 57.0% from the field. Not all of that is on Gobert, of course, but he was caught overhelping at times and just didn’t play all that well.

With the two stars struggling, the Timberwolves fell to a 115-107 loss to the Nuggets, which tied the series at 2-2. They were in complete control after winning the first two games in Denver, but have now handed home-court advantage to the Nuggets after losing both games in Minnesota.

Rudy Gobert Also Made The Money Gesture Toward Scott Foster

That incident with Towns wasn’t the only viral one involving Gobert that night. In the fourth quarter, referee Scott Foster called a loose ball foul on him for pushing Jamal Murray and the three-time All-Star reacted to that call by making a money gesture.

This was the second time he had made that sign at Foster. Earlier this year, Gobert was given a technical foul for mocking the referees with a money gesture. He doubled down on that stance after the game and the NBA later gave him a $100,000 fine. The officials missed it when he did it here, but the league will certainly take some action.

Considering this is the second offense, I do wonder what the punishment will be this time. I don’t expect him to get suspended, especially with how Jamal Murray wasn’t, after throwing a heating pad, making the money sign, and clapping at the officials in Game 2.

Gobert needs to grow up, though. He clearly fouled Murray on that occasion and there is no justification for him making that gesture there. Gobert is a veteran in this league by now and needs to act like one.
