The 2024 Olympic Games are still several months out, but there’s already a growing list of superstars who intend to help USA basketball win the gold medal this year. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, six NBA stars are considered “locks” to commit, barring any last-minute changes.
“Celtics star guard Jrue Holiday is expected to be among the 12 members of Team USA’s roster for the 2024 Olympics, barring unforeseen circumstances,” wrote Shams and Zach Harper. “Holiday would join several superstar players who are considered locks for the Paris Games, barring injury, including Durant, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker.”
After finishing fourth place in the FIBA World Cup last summer, there was a major level of concern for Team USA heading into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. But with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, and Kevin Durant heading the list of expected participants, this could be the year that Team USA reasserts itself at the top of the basketball hierarchy.
The surge in interest began after Team USA’s fourth-place finish in the FIBA World Cup when LeBron James and Stephen Curry vowed to redeem the nation for their upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
Jrue Holiday is the latest player to be in on the 2024 Olympic Games and his commitment is more important than you think. He was a crucial part of the reason they won in Tokyo for the 2020 games and his presence this year could make all the difference in the backcourt. At the very least it adds another proven veteran star to an increasingly stacked team.
From the legendary “Dream Team” with Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson to the iconic “Redeem Team” with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, USA basketball has an impressive track record of star participation in the past. Recently, however, the top players have been reluctant to sign up for the games and Team USA has seen a major decline in their play.
The way things are trending now, this year is likely to be different for USA basketball, and the stage is finally set for them to reestablish themselves as the best in the world.
Team USA Is Making A Major Comeback
After years of subpar showings, there was genuine concern over the direction of USA basketball going forward. As the international scene has developed, we have seen more and more foreign-born superstars begin to master the sport, leaving little room for anyone else at the top. On the international scene, we’re seeing that played out on a larger scale as Team USA begins to fall even with the rest of the competition.
To stay ahead of the field, the U.S. will have to recruit even more stars to join their ranks and they still have a lot to pick from. If Team USA can get commitments from Giannis Antetokounmpo, Draymond Green, Anthony Davis, or Damian Lillard this summer, it will give them an added edge against countries like Serbia, Germany, and Canada for the 2024 gold medal.
As one of the first ones to verbally commit to playing this summer, all eyes will be on the biggest stars (LeBron James and Stephen Curry) in what will likely be their final Olympic run together but we could see any number of high-profile names join the mix in Paris.
