In the NBA today, all anybody can talk about is the level of talent we have seen coming from the young stars in today’s game. While it is true that many young stars and teams are surprising us with their performance, some older players and teams are also performing at a high level. Below, we will break down the 10 oldest and 10 youngest teams in the NBA today by the average age of their 15-man rosters while also seeing how they are faring in this already electric 2023-24 NBA season.

10 Oldest NBA Teams
1. Los Angeles Clippers – 29.1 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On Team:
1. P.J. Tucker – 38 Years Old
2. Russell Westbrook – 35 Years Old
3. James Harden – 34 Years Old
The Los Angeles Clippers have the dubious honor of being the oldest team in the NBA by average age. They are currently 19-12 on the season and sit fourth in the Western Conference standings. While they are being led by 34-year-old Paul George and 33-year-old Kawhi Leonard, they are also getting major contributions from 34-year-old James Harden and 35-year-old Russell Westbrook.
With all four of their Big 4 over 33 years old and leading this team to the top of the conference, I would say they aren’t too worried about their ages affecting their play.
2. Milwaukee Bucks – 28.8 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On Team:
T1. Robin Lopez – 35 Years Old
T1. Brook Lopez – 35 Years Old
T3. Damian Lillard – 33 Years Old
T3. Jae Crowder – 33 Years Old
Somebody should have also told the Milwaukee Bucks that they aren’t supposed to be 24-8 on the season and just two games out of first place in the Eastern Conference considering they are the second-oldest team in the NBA. The Lopez brothers, Brook and Robin, lead the way as the two oldest players on the team at 35 years old heading into the season. Milwaukee’s prized offseason acquisition Damian Lillard is also among their oldest players, averaging 25.9 points per game on 43.9% shooting.
On the bright side, their franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo is just 29 years old and in his prime, likely to lead the franchise into the future for quite some time.
3. Philadelphia 76ers – 28.6 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
T1. Nic Batum – 35 Years Old
T1. Patrick Beverley – 35 Years Old
3. Marcus Morris – 34 Years Old
The Philadelphia 76ers and their 28.6 years old average age come in as the third-oldest team in the NBA, and one of the best teams in the league as well. It appears experience is outweighing youth as the Sixers are also toward the top of their conference standings, sitting at 22-10 on the season and in third in the Eastern Conference. While most of their older players are playing smaller roles, their MVP Joel Embiid is leading the charge with 35.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game at 29 years old.
Projected All-Star Tyrese Maxey is having a breakout season as well at just 23 years old with 26.1 points and 6.5 assists per game on 45.8% shooting.
4. Golden State Warriors – 28.5 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Chris Paul – 38 Years Old
2. Stephen Curry – 35 Years Old
T3. Draymond Green – 33 Years Old
T3. Klay Thompson – 33 Years Old
The first sign of a team slowing down due to age is the Golden State Warriors who have an average age of 28.5 across their roster. The Warriors are struggling to find their way back to dominance with nine players currently over the age of 30 on their roster including the core of their four championship runs. Even their bench is being led by Chris Paul who is the oldest player on the team at 38 years old.
At 15-17 on the season thus far, we could be witnessing the end of the Golden State Warriors dynasty that won four NBA championships from 2015 through 2022.
5. Miami Heat – 27.8 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Kyle Lowry – 37 Years Old
2. Kevin Love – 35 Years Old
3. Jimmy Butler – 34 Years Old
The Miami Heat are also among the teams going against the grain when it comes to age with four players 30 years old or above for the 2023-24 season. Kyle Lowry and Kevin Love are the two players above 35 for the team and both have struggled with injuries and their roles at this point. With that being said, the Heat are 19-13 on the season and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 32 games played in 2023-24.
Coming off an incredible Finals run last season, the Heat are always ones to not pay attention to what the masses are talking about and counting them out. Don’t be surprised if they are a team that represents the East in the Conference Finals yet again this season.
6. Phoenix Suns – 27.7 Years
Oldest Players On The Team:
T1. Kevin Durant – 35 Years Old
T1. Eric Gordon – 35 Years Old
3. Bradley Beal – 30 Years Old
The Phoenix Suns were inevitably going to wind up on this list when they went out and acquired Kevin Durant last season. Along with Eric Gordon, Durant is the oldest player on the Suns this season with Bradley Beal being their only other player above 30 years old. The Suns, who have struggled due to injury and depth issues, are currently 17-15 on the season and eighth in the Western Conference.
Luckily for them, they are undefeated to this point when their Big 3 of Durant, Beal, and Devin Booker are in the lineup, going 2-0 in such games so far this season.
T7. Toronto Raptors – 27.3 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Garrett Temple – 37 Years Old
2. Thaddeus Young – 35 Years Old
3. Chris Boucher – 31 Years Old
The Toronto Raptors are an interesting team on this list, to say the least. While they are one of the 10 oldest teams in the NBA this season, their oldest rostered players have also seen extremely limited time on the court doing very little to contribute to their 12-20 record and 12th-place standing in the East right now.
The Raptors made a move this weekend, trading 26-year-old OG Anunoby to New York in exchange for the younger duo of RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. Franchise mainstay Pascal Siakam is also said to be on the trading block as the team heads towards a rebuild around 22-year-old star Scottie Barnes.
T7. Dallas Mavericks – 27.3 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Markieff Morris – 34 Years Old
2. Seth Curry – 33 Years Old
T3. Maxi Kleber – 32 Years Old
T3. Dwight Powell – 32 Years Old
Although the Mavericks have been led for the last few seasons by Luka Doncic at just 24 years old, they also come armed with seven players over the age of 30 for the 2023-24 season. Despite their age, the Mavericks are off to a decent start with a record of 19-14 and tied for sixth in the West through 33 games.
Dallas may be the fourth-oldest Western Conference team in the NBA right now but the fact that Doncic is their leader and the production they have gotten from 19-year-old rookie Dereck Lively shows they are heading in the right direction this season and beyond.
9. Boston Celtics – 27.2 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Al Horford – 37 Years Old
2. Jrue Holiday 33 Years Old
3. Derrick White – 29 Years Old
As we get into the bottom portion of the 10 oldest teams in the NBA, it is clear that age does not affect these lineups. The Celtics currently boast the NBA’s top record at 26-5 on the season with just two players on their roster over the age of 30 years old. The core of their lineup lies with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum who are 27 and 25 years old respectively in 2023-24.
Even with the ninth-oldest roster in the league, the Celtics have championship aspirations for 2023-24 and look as if they are heading that way as the year continues on.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers – 27.1 Years (15 Players)
Oldest Players On The Team:
1. Tristan Thompson – 32 Years Old
2. Georges Niang – 30 Years Old
3. Caris LeVert – 29 Years Old
The Cleveland Cavaliers finish off the top 10 oldest teams in the NBA this season with a roster that has an average age of 27.1 years old. Only two players for the Cavaliers are aged 30 or above with those two being Tristan Thompson and Georges Niang. Luckily for them, it is their youth that has led them to an 18-14 record and sixth place in the East through 32 games.
While they just cracked the top 10 for the oldest teams in the league, the Cavaliers’ core of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Evan Mobley all remain under 28 years old, and what has led them to such success in the early going of the season.
10 Youngest NBA Teams
1. Portland Trail Blazers – 23.9 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
T1. Scoot Henderson – 19 Years Old
T1. Rayan Rupert – 19 Years Old
3. Shaedon Sharpe – 20 Years Old
After trading away Damian Lillard this offseason, the Portland Trail Blazers officially became the youngest team in the NBA with an average age of 23.9 years old. Looking to build around their young talent hasn’t exactly panned out for them just yet as they are just 9-22 on the season and 14th in the West at this point.
Looking ahead is probably the most exciting thing about this Portland team with just one active player on their roster, Malcolm Brogdon, over the age of 30 years old this season. Things may look bleak for the young team out West right now but their future is ripe with youth that could change that all around.
2. San Antonio Spurs – 24.0 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
1. Sidy Cissoko – 19 Years Old
T2. Victor Wembanyama – 20 Years Old
T2. Jeremy Sochan – 20 Years Old
T2. Dominick Barlow – 20 Years Old
T2. Blake Wesley – 20 Years Old
T2. Malaki Branham – 20 Years Old
The San Antonio Spurs are another team struggling in 2023-24 despite being riddled with youth up and down their lineup. Led by 20-year-old phenom Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are just 5-27 on the season, struggling to find their way through a tough Western Conference and getting used to an entirely new environment for most of their young players.
The good news is there is a lot to look forward to in the future with 12 players under the age of 25 on their roster and just one player over 35 years old on their roster.
3. Oklahoma City Thunder – 24.1 Years ( 15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
T1. Ousmane Dieng – 20 Years Old
T1. Cason Wallace – 20 Years Old
T3. Chet Holmgren – 21 Years Old
T3. Josh Giddey – 21 Years Old
T3. Jaylin Williams – 21 Years Old
The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the youngest teams in the NBA this season which is why it is so surprising that they have figured things out so quickly. Currently, the Thunder are 22-9 on the season with most of their production coming from their core of players 25 years old or under. Rookie Chet Holmgren has made a massive impact thus far and 25-year-old Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is having an MVP-caliber campaign with 31.2 points and 6.3 assists per game.
This young team is not only in the hunt for a top playoff seed but they are proving that they are a team that needs to be taken seriously and could challenge the top teams in the league in 2023-24 for an NBA championship.
T4. Charlotte Hornets – 24.3 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
1. Nick Smith Jr. – 19 Years Old
T2. Brandon Miller – 21 Years old
T2. JT Thor – 21 Years Old
T2. Bryce McGowens – 21 Years Old
The presence of youth in the Charlotte Hornets lineup this season has never been more evident. They currently sit at 7-22 on the season with no real end in sight for their misery. The Hornets have 10 players under the age of 25 on their roster and with yet another lengthy injury sidelining their franchise star LaMelo Ball since November 10.
The Hornets have had a string of bad luck drafting young talent over the last decade which has led to their sustainability as one of the worst teams in the league during that stretch.
T4. Orlando Magic – 24.3 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
T1. Jett Howard – 20 Years Old
T1. Anthony Black – 20 Years Old
T2. Paolo Banchero – 21 Years Old
T2. Caleb Houstan – 21 Years Old
The Orlando Magic are another team riddled with youth that is exceeding expectations this season. They currently have nine players under the age of 25 on their roster including the star duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner who have each yet to reach 23 years old. The Magic have surprised many in 2023-24 with a 19-13 record to start the season, inserting themselves in the thick of the playoff race in a crowded Eastern Conference.
T6. Brooklyn Nets – 24.9 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
T1. Dariq Whitehead – 19 Years Old
T1. Noah Clowney – 19 Years Old
3. Keon Johnson – 21 Years Old
The Brooklyn Nets and two other franchises each have rosters that average out to 24.9 years old, bringing them in as the sixth-youngest teams in the NBA. So far in 2023-24, the Nets have struggled, currently sitting three games under .500 and well out of the playoff race in the East. Cam Thomas and Nic Claxton are two major contributors to the team who are just 22 years old while Cameron Johnson and Mikal Bridges, who came over in the Kevin Durant trade, are just 27 years old.
T6. Utah Jazz – 24.9 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
T1. Keyonte George – 20 Years Old
T1. Brice Sensabaugh – 20 Years Old
T1. Taylor Hendricks – 20 Years Old
Also coming in with an average age of players just below 25 years old is the Utah Jazz. The Jazz are armed with nine players in total who are under the age of 25 this season. Rookie Keyonte George is making the most impact of those players along with defensive stopper Walker Kessler who is defending the paint like his life depended on it.
The Jazz are currently 14-19 on the season and 12th in the Western Conference. Only two players, Jordan Clarkson and Kelly Olynyk, are over the age of 30 as well.
T6. Detroit Pistons – 24.9 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
1. Jalen Duren – 20 Years Old
T2. Jaden Ivey – 21 Years Old
T2. Ausar Thompson – 21 Years Old
If any team could use their youth as an excuse as to why they are underperforming, it is the Detroit Pistons. Coming off a historic 28-game losing streak, the Pistons are just 3-29 in 2023-24 with 13 players under the age of 25 on their roster. Of those 13 players, nine of them have been asked to take on a pivotal role with the team this year including star point guard Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Jaden Hardy, and Ausar Thompson.
The Pistons are likely to not recover to become anything note-worthy this season but any knowledgeable basketball fan will tell you that they are a team to look out for in the future given all of the young talents they have accumulated.
9. Indiana Pacers – 25.1 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
1. Jarace Walker – 20 Years Old
T2. Bennedict Mathurin – 21 Years Old
T2. Ben Sheppard – 21 Years Old
The Indiana Pacers are the ninth-youngest team in the NBA as of right now with 11 players 25 years old or younger on their roster. The Pacers have been streaky in 2023-24, boasting the NBA’s highest-scoring offense with 126.6 points per game scored as a team. That surge has been led by 23-year-old All-Star Tyrese Haliburton who is averaging 24.6 points and 12.8 assists per game through 28 games played.
As great as their offense has been, their defense is among the worst in the NBA which has led to their mediocre 17-14 record through 31 games.
10. Memphis Grizzlies – 25.5 Years (15 Players)
Youngest Players On The Team:
1. Gregory Jackson – 19 Years Old
T2. Jake LaRavia – 22 Years Old
T2. Ziaire Williams – 22 Years Old
T2. David Roddy – 22 Years Old
Rounding out the top 10 youngest teams in the NBA this season is the Memphis Grizzlies who are currently 10-22 on the season and 12th in the Western Conference standings. The team has been much better as of later after welcoming back point guard Ja Morant but still have a lot of work to do to make up for lost time.
In order to turn things around, they will turn to their young roster which has 10 players under the age of 25 including Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
