In the NBA today, all anybody can talk about is the level of talent we have seen coming from the young stars in today’s game. While it is true that many young stars and teams are surprising us with their performance, some older players and teams are also performing at a high level. Below, we will break down the 10 oldest and 10 youngest teams in the NBA today by the average age of their 15-man rosters while also seeing how they are faring in this already electric 2023-24 NBA season.

10 Oldest NBA Teams

1. Los Angeles Clippers – 29.1 Years (15 Players)

3. James Harden – 34 Years Old

The Los Angeles Clippers have the dubious honor of being the oldest team in the NBA by average age. They are currently 19-12 on the season and sit fourth in the Western Conference standings. While they are being led by 34-year-old Paul George and 33-year-old Kawhi Leonard, they are also getting major contributions from 34-year-old James Harden and 35-year-old Russell Westbrook.

With all four of their Big 4 over 33 years old and leading this team to the top of the conference, I would say they aren’t too worried about their ages affecting their play.

2. Milwaukee Bucks – 28.8 Years (15 Players)

The Lopez brothers, Brook and Robin, lead the way as the two oldest players on the team at 35 years old heading into the season. Milwaukee’s prized offseason acquisition Damian Lillard is also among their oldest players, averaging 25.9 points per game on 43.9% shooting.

On the bright side, their franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo is just 29 years old and in his prime, likely to lead the franchise into the future for quite some time.

While most of their older players are playing smaller roles, their MVP Joel Embiid is leading the charge with 35.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game at 29 years old.

The first sign of a team slowing down due to age is the Golden State Warriors who have an average age of 28.5 across their roster. The Warriors are struggling to find their way back to dominance with nine players currently over the age of 30 on their roster including the core of their four championship runs. Even their bench is being led by Chris Paul who is the oldest player on the team at 38 years old.

At 15-17 on the season thus far, we could be witnessing the end of the Golden State Warriors dynasty that won four NBA championships from 2015 through 2022.

The Miami Heat are also among the teams going against the grain when it comes to age with four players 30 years old or above for the 2023-24 season. Kyle Lowry and Kevin Love are the two players above 35 for the team and both have struggled with injuries and their roles at this point. With that being said, the Heat are 19-13 on the season and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 32 games played in 2023-24.

The Suns, who have struggled due to injury and depth issues, are currently 17-15 on the season and eighth in the Western Conference.

The Toronto Raptors are an interesting team on this list, to say the least. While they are one of the 10 oldest teams in the NBA this season, their oldest rostered players have also seen extremely limited time on the court doing very little to contribute to their 12-20 record and 12th-place standing in the East right now.

The Raptors made a move this weekend, trading 26-year-old OG Anunoby to New York in exchange for the younger duo of RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. Franchise mainstay Pascal Siakam is also said to be on the trading block as the team heads towards a rebuild around 22-year-old star Scottie Barnes.

Dallas may be the fourth-oldest Western Conference team in the NBA right now but the fact that Doncic is their leader and the production they have gotten from 19-year-old rookie Dereck Lively shows they are heading in the right direction this season and beyond.

The Celtics currently boast the NBA’s top record at 26-5 on the season with just two players on their roster over the age of 30 years old. The core of their lineup lies with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum who are 27 and 25 years old respectively in 2023-24.

Even with the ninth-oldest roster in the league, the Celtics have championship aspirations for 2023-24 and look as if they are heading that way as the year continues on.

10. Cleveland Cavaliers – 27.1 Years (15 Players)

The Cleveland Cavaliers finish off the top 10 oldest teams in the NBA this season with a roster that has an average age of 27.1 years old. Only two players for the Cavaliers are aged 30 or above with those two being Tristan Thompson and Georges Niang. Luckily for them, it is their youth that has led them to an 18-14 record and sixth place in the East through 32 games.

While they just cracked the top 10 for the oldest teams in the league, the Cavaliers’ core of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Evan Mobley all remain under 28 years old, and what has led them to such success in the early going of the season.

Looking ahead is probably the most exciting thing about this Portland team with just one active player on their roster, Malcolm Brogdon, over the age of 30 years old this season. Things may look bleak for the young team out West right now but their future is ripe with youth that could change that all around.
